+1 for .38 Super.

The perfect combination of .357 Sig velocity, 9mm Luger capacity, and .45 ACP gentle rolling recoil (vs the snappy recoil of other high-pressure cartridges).

Just make sure you hand load it because factory ammunition is hard to find in large quantities.

My first "1911" was a Colt Double Eagle bought new about 17 years ago, my second 1911 was just bought yesterday, a Wilson Combat Classic. I just fell in love again.

For me it's heritage and versatility.

Really, these things are to handguns - whichever applies to you;
Small block Chevy
Sportster engine
Suzuki GS motor
Jeep Cherokee

You can make whatever you can afford to out of one - loosey goosey field gun, race gun, space gun, hunter, plinker or defensive pistol.

All things are already known about the rounds and the gun. And the information is readily accessible.

Most of us grew up reading about and/or viewing its use in the defense of our nation.

Many of us utilized it in the defense of same.

Like the pistol or not, it is an enduring example of one man' brilliance which you can buy affordably.

It's incredibly easy and gratifying to reload for.

Versatile? .22 to 10mm with a half dozen calibers in between, each developed to complete reliability - no compromises.

I still get that people don't like them for various reasons but hell, I don't like Glocks square in the face of logic. I know that Glocks are outstanding firearms... I just don't feel it.
