I have a Checkmate 7 round 1911 mag that Fails to load the 3rd round in my 1911 consistently. Rounds 1-2 and 4-7 all load fine. How would one troubleshoot this?

I tired of trying to over think and waste too much time in trouble shooting suspected magazine related issues some years ago.

If it were me, I'd probably inspect the spring, looking for any obvious kink, cut, coil oddity, etc. Installed right? Correct spring design for that follower?

See if a new spring resolves the problem.

Ditto the follower.

If replacing both the spring & follower didn't correct the issue, and the "problem" didn't occur with any other mag used in the same gun? (In other words, isolating the probable cause down to the specific mag.)

Ditch the mag and replace it. Lots of 1911 mags in the world.

Just my thoughts.

Just don't load that third round. :)
Yeah, messing around with defective mags isn't worth the time, aggravation and mistrust nagging at the back of one's brain.
Just chuck it.
Or give it to someone you don't like.

If the problem is repeatable and there is no doubt the problem is indeed caused by the magazine I am in the toss it or put it in a padded envelope and return to manufacturer. You can take the magazine down and look at the spring, follower and housing lips till you are blue in the face and never see what causes the problem, doing little more than challenging your sanity. I own and enjoy shooting several 1911 guns and my magazines are Colt factory mags or Wilson. If I suspect a faulty magazine I just trash it and move along.

Some folks suggest smashing errant magazines flat, just to remove the temptation of further exasperation.
