Hey guys, I had a thread a few weeks ago about me losing the firing pin stop plunger spring in my 1911. I haven't purchased a new spring yet and went out shooting today. One of my magazines will actually release the slide if you slap it in hard, which loads a fresh round into the chamber. I did that today and the chambered round fired without my finger on the trigger. Good thing I always point it in a safe direction at all times. I definitely know I need to reinstall the firing pin plunger spring, but I'd also like to fix my sear issue.

When my slide drops, the hammer will follow. It used to be that you could hold the trigger down, which disconnects the trigger and the hammer would not follow down. Today I found out that even if you hold the trigger down, the hammer will follow. Do I just need to replace the sear? Do I need a new disconnector or hammer? Anything else I might consider replacing?

I guess what I really need to know is if I replace my sear, should I replace the hammer as well. If it's not really necessary, would it be helpful to do so anyway?

My parts list so far:
Trigger
Sear
Hammer
Sear Spring
Firing Pin Plunger Spring

I'm replacing the trigger because my current trigger is broken. It's still functional, but it doesn't move as freely as it probably should, so I may as well replace it.

If a 1911 hammer follows and doesn't get stopped by the intercept notch on the hammer before hitting the firing pin??

You have other issues besides a missing FP block plunger.

Before you spend a bunch of money on parts?
Take it apart and see what is damaged.

For whatever reason, the safety intercept notch on the hammer isn't doing it's thing.

Throwing money at it isn't going to fix it if you don't know what is wrong with the parts you have.

What should I look for on the hammer? I understand some of the extreme basics of how this pistol works, but I'm in no way an expert.

When it's all assembled, the hammer will go and stay at half cock. You can pull the trigger while at half cock and and the hammer will drop. I brought the hammer almost all the way to full cock and dropped it without touching the trigger and it was caught by the half cock notch.

I just disassembled and reassembled it without seeing anything I would consider out of place. If there is a problem, it's been there for years and I never knew about it.

I did just remember that my pistol does something strange that I'm not sure is normal or not. When the hammer is all the way down (pressing against the slide) and you rack the slide back a little bit (not enough to fully cock the hammer), the hammer will go into a kind of half cock. When the hammer is in this position, it cannot be dropped by the trigger. I'm assuming it's in the half cock position and the disconnector has been depressed. You can either cock the hammer or rack the slide to bring the pistol back to normal operation.

You need a new hammer. Can't tell about the sear, but why not since you'll be getting a new hammer. It's probably damaged as well.
