I"ve got a 1911 that I was shooting yesterday. (I am kinda new to 1911's, having been a revolver and glock man) everything was working flawlessly, then a problem developed. slide locks back when gun empty, then, upon inserting a loaded magazine, the slide stopped moving forward into battery when pulled back and released (ala glock slingshot method) the slide release works fine and releases the slide. I just cleaned the gun thoroughly and the problem persists. any suggestions?

Did you try a different magazine? Maybe you've got a bent follower or something. I'm just shooting in the dark though.

pt1911, happened on 2 different magazines, a complete field strip and all parts cleaned off. all rounds seem to be doing what they should be in the magazine. they don't sit funny or anything.

nobody knows why the locked back slide won't release by pulling the slide back and releasing it when no magazine or loaded magazine is present?

Its not rocket science. Look at the bullet and see it its feeding properly but just held up, in which case its a magazine with a very strong spring. If the bullet is nosed into the feed ramp and keeping the slide from closing or failing to chamber and nosing into the top of the barrel hood, or if its a JHP it can hang up on the bottom of the feed ramp then you need to look at the magazine or change ammo for something that will feed.

Try loading one less round and see if that works (strong mag spring). If that works reliably then when you are through shooting top the magazine off and leave it loaded until the next time, that should give the springs a set and reduce their strength a bit.

Sorry bud, but you got me on this one.

Taurus does use some proprietary non-1911 parts if I am not mistaken, so I can't really be sure as to what's going on. My only guess, and I doubt this is even the case, would be a loose or bent ejector binding the slide, but like I said, I am totally shooting in the dark and grasping at straws. Another guess would be that lock they use. Maybe it's malfunctioning. Just guessing here.

Do you by chance have a Shock-Buff on the recoil spring plug?

That will do it every time!

Keeps the slide from coming back all the way by 1/8", so the notch in the slide can kick the slide stop down.

I pulled the factory installed shok buff out and the gun is behaving correctly now. rcmodel wins again! buff says wilson and is kind of dinged up on one edge. I guess that was all it took. I guess now I need to research what it does and why it was in there in the first place.

They install those things at the factory?! :barf:

I would've never imagined that there was a Shok-buff there. Didn't even cross my mind. Even Wilson, who sells them separately, doesn't put them on their weapons.

actually, I just recalled that I bought this particular gun used. it's my first and only 1911 so I assumed it was a normal part. previous owner must have installed it.
