1911- still a war worthy?

Being secondary weapon to a solder this can be used, but two that passed to LGS cost $1675 each which means the government gets them for about $1000. For that price they could squeeze in three G21s. I'm sick and tired of government agencies throwing taxpayer money away.

Except the government, is paying for weapons, spares, logistics and support. Not quite as simple as looking at the MSRP and deducting what you think is relevant.

Newsflash countglockulla, EVERYTHING the military uses has platoons of armorers and secure supply lines, not just for weapons either! Thats why the military will tend to stay with a given platform, whatever it is until something really better comes along, or politics of some sort dictates a change, sometimes not for the better. Having said that, I would still carry a 1911A1. Whats up with this dead thread resurrection stuff? I thought we beat this to death months ago. LOL :D

Im of the mind that the 1911 is more of an enthusists pistol than anything. Its a fine firearm and still a viable weapon but so is the Enfield and you dont really see people clamoring to readopt those either.

Also IIRC using FMJ ammo the difference between all service calibers be it 9mm, 40s&w or 45acp is basically nil with muzzle energy and stuff like one shot stop. Im not in the military but if the above data is true, id rather have more rounds available for the same amount of weight so id rather have a double stack 9mm.

Our military is not allowed to use FMJ..

All this is fine and dandy...but let's completely forget about "muzzle energy" and "one shot stop" with respect to small caliber sidearms in the military. A sidearm is just that...a sidearm. It's not anything except the lowest of the low when it comes to combat. It has next to nothing with respect to range and penetration when compared to even the least of the rifles.

And honestly...given the choice, you'd REALLY rather have more rifle rounds available for the weight, period.

Pistols occupy a very, VERY tiny role in combat. People really need to stop with making out the choice of pistol as something that, somehow, makes or breaks the military.

From Jack Leuba (F2S Consulting, USMC retired):

(paraphrased, more bleeps needed)

The purpose of the bleeping handgun is to save your bleeping life when your rifle stops working and transitioning to handgun makes sense. In these instances, the transition to handgun is bleepety bleeping bleep faster and allows the bleeping shooter to get bleeping rounds into an imminent bleeping threat.

If they handed me a 1911 as I went to war, then that is what I would use. I am sure a properly tuned gun, maintained by me in the field, would be fine for the purpose. I would prefer something other than a 1911, but the military would not give me the choice.

After all of the (very valuable) theorizing, I still would advise burglars to skip my home and my nightstand Kimber. I am too old now to go to war (again), so I don't mind if my pistol is too.

I do own a hi-cap 9mm SA XD. The Kimber is still on the nightstand.

I thought they HAD to use FMJ, or what is called "ball ammo."

Correct, I don't know what the hell I was thinking. I'll chalk it up to that bottle of wine I was consuming at the time..:banghead:
