I have a SA Mil-Spec. I don't like the way the thumb safety feels on it. Also, when I sweep it down "off" it travels beyond the plunger/tube then pops back up when pressure is released. Is this likely a thumb safety fitting issue? It functions fine, but never has been right.

Not really a fit issue, more of a spec issue. The window in the frame might be oversize or worn or the protrusion in the safety might be worn or out of spec.

Safeties are cheap and relatively easy to fit. You could always try another.

Try replacing the plunger spring assembly with a new one from Brownells or Midway. Be sure to order the spring and both plunger detents (sometimes sold seperately). Cost would be only a few bucks for a new one. Should solve your problem and is the simplest, cheapest, likely fix before you start replacing the safety.

The detent on the safety for the off posistion is in the wrong place for that particular gun. If you look closely you will see a round detent in the face of the safety. If you're good with a dremel and a small stone or round carbide bit you can move it up a little and get the safety to stay down. I doubt if a new pluger or spring will help. A new safety might do the trick.

I don't think there is any problem with the plunger/springs/detents. They are in good condition and seem to function fine. Either the safety is traveling too far, or as CCW1911 said above, the detent on the safety is in the wrong place.

...or give Springfield an opportunity to fix it. Their Customer Service gets pretty high marks.
