Decided to upgrade the trigger parts on my SA Mil-Spec. Replaced the trigger, sear, disconnect, hammer and strut with Wilson Combat Bulletproof parts. Swapped out the mainspring housing and grip safety from my SA Champion because it had the cut to fit the bobbed hammer. My original thumb safety was a little harder to get back in. Once reassembled it functioned almost perfectly. Big trigger pull improvement. Problem: can't engage the thumb safety. Obviously a little filing is in order. Does anyone know if any YouTube videos or schematics that show what I need to do. Any advice appreciated, Thanks, Larry

I have never purchased a thumb safety for a 1911 that was a drop in. Understandably so. Buy a high quality file and a black marker. Slowly file the safety while observing the contact points rubbed shiny from the black marker. This isn't all this hard but takes some time and patience. Safeties are serious business.

Thank you, that article was really helpful. I was on their website, do they have one for fitting grip safeties?

Not that I'm aware of but here is one that works. This works best if you have a pin set, so you can step up in size till you get to the one your using. It's a slow process to do one right. I use a candle to soot the frame to see where it's contacting at. Just be aware that the safety tang can cause fit issues when you get close.

Thanks, I had seen this one, just wished he had some better close ups of his work
Here's a pic showing the sear engagement surface at "B". Note the spot where the blue marker has been worn off from repeatedly pushing the safety up and down. That's what you want - contact with the sear to prevent it from moving at all. The 10-8 armorer block is a big help in filing that engagement surface. You can see it in the picture below.

I appreciate that pic, thank you

Wilson Combat beavertail installed on a SA Champion without hardly a hitch. Slow and steady with the file and the safety is fitted to the frame, not vice versa. Now I know exactly what to do next time.

Not too bad for all file work. Can't really help the gaps because you have to be able to use the file. Only thing matters is that it works. Gunsmith would of had to build jigs to hold the safety. Four months later and a whole lot of money and it would have been done. I finished in about 3 hours plus the time to reblue. And now I have an even better knowledge of how the 1911 works internally. Genius simplicity.
