I want a colt 1911 as close to the wwii style as possible. I want the 1911 for home defense for two reasons;

First type of cool, very practical, triple saftey for my son and the one on the way, large 45 cal will stop an intruder well.

Second type of cool, my dad carried one when he was a loader for an anti tank gun in wwii.

Yes the above is a nutnfancy term, i like the guy, so sue me.

Anyway, i want a nice classic looking one,without the light rail as a permanent feature, so i'm thinking of a detachable rail, but will it negatively affect the balance?

Anytime you hang something off the front of a gun, it will affect the center of gravity. I use lights on several of my guns, and after a while you won't notice it. The bigger issue is making sure you practice manipulating the light on and off so that under stress you don't have to think about it. The nice thing about a Surefire is that "on" is left side down, so when I draw, my support hand naturally hits the switch. The Surefire is pretty expensive though when compared to the Streamlights, so its really up to your budget. Training will fix it either way.

Several people make aftermarket rails, including Command Arms, Surefire, and Insight, I believe.

Anything "detachable" will, by definition, detach. And, because Murphy's Law isn't just a suggestion, it will detach (see above) at the LEAST opportune moment IMAGINABLE. Get a 1911A1 because you WANT one. Then learn some good flashlight technique that doesn't require a rail. There's plenty out there.
