My parents had always raised me rather anti-gun. My dad's father was a pacifist who refused to fight in WWII, and despised weapons. My mom grew up republican and around guns, and actually voted for Reagan in the 80's, but soon became sucked into liberalism. She and my dad just had an ignorant view that guns were bad, hearing it from their liberal friends so much.

Then I came along. I'd always been fascinated with guns and weapons, but always had been brought up knowing that they were "bad". Around 11, when a 6th grade teacher enlightened me, I started to realize that guns really aren't objects of evil, and they shouldn't be restricted. My parents were constantly bombarded by me with reasons why we should buy guns, why gun control is wrong, etc. They saw the light, and started to agree with me. Starting when I was 12, we ended up acquiring a few guns. My dad was always the one to take me shooting. My mom had never shot guns, and we took her along once with us to shoot. Still, while she agreed with me politically, she didn't like shooting much.

Anyway, the point of this longwinded story is that yesterday, my mom made an impulse purchase of a Sig P232. I'd been interested in her applying for a CCW as she's a pharmicist (guarding thousands of dollars worth of narcotics), and wanted to show her some possible carry guns. She wasn't "in" to the idea, but went along with me to the gunstore- and totally unexpectedly just bought the gun. We handled a few guns from a Glock to a Sig P239, and didn't really seem interested with them. She then asked about the used 232 on the rack, and picked it up. She actually liked it, and I soon felt why. It's perfectly balanced, and is ultra-ergonomic. It just "feels good" in your hand. The euro-style mag release isn't nearly as much of a PITA as some are, it's quite easy and hassle-free. This is her personal defense gun, so even though 9mm would have been better IMO, her feeling comfortable with it is absolutely the most important factor to consider. .380 is fine for defense, and the reduced recoil is an incentive for her to practice more and not be intimidated by it.

So, a non-gun owner bought a gun for personal protection. I'm pretty jazzed about it-she'd been converted to my side for a while, but it was really nice to see her actually purchase a handgun.

Now she just needs to "cool off" for 10 days and get tested on "handgun safety" [The safest place to point a gun is A) In a safe direction away from all people B)Towards the person next to you C)Down D)At your head] before she gets the gun. (Grumbles angrily about California)

Congrats. Great to have another one see the light. I spoke with a good friend today who's daughter wanted to take an NRA basic Rifle class I was offering at their high school. Mother and Father were very against the idea. Once we finished speaking they were at least considering letting their daughter take the class.

Congrats! When she gets it she will probably need some training, and practice-practice-practice! She needs to be comfortable and confident with the weapon, it's your job to see to it! :)

You did well. Proud of ya' brother. It's also very cool your mom would choose Sigs.

However...next Christmas get her the 220 ST! ;)

The year after that, you can start her on 1911s.

Yep, Sigs are a favorite of mine. I was quite confident when we bought it because of its brand name. Even before this, I was planning on getting a 226 sometime this year.

On training, I'll show her how to operate and shoot it soon after she gets it to the point where she's comfortable with basic shooting. Then, if she is approved for CCW, she will later get defensive training as required by law.

awesome...

like your parents, my wife was brought up thinking that guns in general were bad...

...i have been a gun collector and carrier for years before i met my wife, but because i respected her views, i sold all my guns to pay for the wedding and other necessities... guns weren't allowed (even toy guns) in the house, especially when our child was born...

...but much to my surprise, she had a change of heart... 3 years ago, we started playing paintball and i slowly introduced to her how safe guns were, if treated with respect... then couple of years later, she was open to me owning gun(s)...

...she's still not too fond of 'em, and still wont go to the range with me, but she seems more secure that we have one as a home defense...

peace,

Oh boy..........Sigs mulitiply like crazy. By law Sigs can't stand to be by themselves Henry. Your 226 might come sooner than you think!

Congrats on welcoming a new Sig to the family!!
