I would like to have my Colt Combat Commander fitted with a red dot sight that will let me co-witness with the iron sights.

Does anyone have one and/or can direct me to getting that done?

So far THRers are batting a thousand in getting me right with the world. I would really appreciate it if you kept the average up. Thanks..... Doc

I'm not sure you can do that because most red dots either sit high up in a fancy mount like on bullseye guns and would need extremely high iron sights or it sits in the rear sight dovetail which would mean you couldn't have your sights. You might want to reach out to a good 1911 smith and see if they have any ideas though.

Check out David Bowie, he's cutting 1911 slides for mini red dots and installing suppressor height sight to allow you to cowitness the dot.
I believe he recommends Leupold DeltaPoints, the Trijicon RMR mounting screws are set just a hair wide for the narrow 1911 slide. I've run TrijiconRMR02s on a couple of FNs (a FNP45 Tactical and a FNP9 that was set up by One Source Tactical) and loved them both. If I were doing one of my 1911s I go to Bowie.

WC145 - I checked out David Bowie as you suggested and I liked what I saw. I’m going to need the suppressor sights too. Comparatively the pricing seems to be fair, but the turn around time is 16 to 24 weeks… ouch!

I’ll give them a call soon and I’ll sort out the particulars with them.

I appreciate the heads up. Thanks…..Doc

I've never had work done by Bowie, but have met him and trained with him. Good guy. I've seen his work and handled some of his pistols. I'm impressed with both the workmanship and utility of his work.

If your Commander is a Series '80, be sure to ask whether the slide can be machined for the RMR without impacting the firing pin safety function.

1911 guy - I’ve only heard good things about his work and I hope I get the opportunity to speak with him when I call his company.

farscott - Funny thing… The frame on my Commander has a serial number beginning with 80- just like the Series 80 Gov’t models.

My slide does not have the firing pin block or any “Series 80” slide marking and the frame does not have the actuating arm for the firing pin block… go figure!

Even if your slide had the S80 parts, they can be removed and the hole plugged. Funnily enough all 5 of my Colts are S80 guns, four have been worked and have had the S80 parts removed, the fifth is a new Commander and it is at the 'smith being done over now and will also return sans 80 parts.
