I picked up a new revolver this afternoon. It is a Colt Cobra (.38 Special) made in 1973 (not 1970 - that was an error). The previous owner had a gunsmith bob the hammer, cut the grip to fit flush with the bottom of the frame, and added a white sight insert (not crazy about the sight). I have quite a few Detective Specials, Cobras, etc…but they get pocket carried less often than the S&W J-frames because of the extra bulk from the grips. Cutting the grip down to the frame makes this Cobra as comfortable as an Airweight J-frame in the pocket.

Gordon,

My thoughts exactly. I didn't need another Cobra (not that need as anything to do with it) but this one was made for me. I couldn't pass it up. I hit the "buy it now" button on Gunbroker so I didn't lose it.

Very nice carry gun! I don't think I could bring myself to modify one of my Colts, but if it's already been done, it would become a favored carry gun.

Those are Colt "Agent" grips, I believe. The Cobra, Detective Special, and Agent of that period all have "short" frames, but the DS and Cobra usually came with extended wood grips. The only serious mods were the sight and bobbed hammer.

NC, very nice find. I also have several D frame Colts. They are gems and make great carry guns, especially with a bobbed or shrouded hammer. Mine usually rides in a Desantis ankle rig.

Check out Badger Custom Grips sometime. http://www.badgercustomgrips.com/ Jim Badger makes great boot grips for the Colt D frames like the ones on two of my Cobras shown below. Note the bobbed hammer on the blued gun.

Badger Grips

Thanks for the link to the company. I've been looking for some similar grips for an old model Security Six I have.

Those are Eagle Grips. It is the "Eagle Secret Service." I expected them to be a bit shorter...but they are made very well.

Early Cobra and earlier DS. Stocks except for grips.

Thanks a lot! While I ean toward the smoother design of the Eagles I can now see why you guys like the Badgers, they are quite a bit thinner. I guess you can get Badgers too, unlike Craig Spegel unobtainium Boot Grips!

NCBeagle,

I was sooo tempted to click on that when I saw it on GunBroker and wrestled over the decision too long I see. Very nice gun. Enjoy!

Sweet Fitz. Surprised you didin't round the grips or at least 'bevel' the edges. And (gasp) the top of the hammer isn't checkered? For shame!

Kidding, that's really cool.

Double action, I have a friend that does that with twin Centennials, I always joke he's carrying more leather than gun.

Wish they made those Badger grips to fit a Magnum Carry.

DaveinPA,

I struggled with it for a day or so myself...but decided to hit the "buy it now." I wanted to pick it up over the weekend and the seller was able to meet me for a face-to-face transfer. The only thing it needs is a Tyler T-Grip.

NCBeagle,

I agree that a T-grip would be a fine finishing touch. Or even a Barami Hip Grip/T-grip combo for IWB carry on occasion. Either way, you got a fine looking weapon there.

I'm glad to see it went to a buyer who truly appreciates it.

Can I join it too? :)

Just finished modifying a set of Siles walnut skip checkered grips. Didn't care too much for the busy look of the skip checkering, and the sharp ridges, so I broke out the dremel and came up with these. Four coats of tung oil, and a grip adapter. Great size for pocket carry.
1973-ish Cobra.

NCBeagle: I like the looks of these grips. How much do they cost and do you have a web site address for Eagle grips? When you commented that you expected the grips to be "a bit shorter", how far from the grip frame do the stocks extend?
