1970's vintage Hi Standard Trophy short cycling

Tried standard velocity and hi velocity. Same thing. Slide closes on partially chambered round. Gun clean. Ramp smooth. Not every time.

Short cycling usually refers to squib load which doesn't have the power to extract and eject the case, so the case remains in the chamber or in the ejection port. If I understand your problem the empty case is ejected but the slide doesn't pick up the next round and ends up jamming against the middle of the round. Is this correct ? If so it's it may be a magazine spring or dirty magazine. Take it apart and clean it. Does the problem happen with only that magazine , does it happen with other ammo?

it reminded me that I ...do...have one mag that is not so great. I will try one of the others and see if it helps.

Might even oil the follower a bit.

Trying to remember back a few years, does the magazine follower have have a bit of a transverse groove ? I think the HS magazine follower is made of zinc (soft) and with time a bit of a groove develops which catches the rim and the slide rides over the rim. see if you can file the follower smooth. I think I made one of steel for someone.

Besides the other suggestions check the following:

1. Dirt in the extractor spring causing it to bind.

2. Be sure the chamber is clean, and that it has not been burred by dry firing.

3. Remove and streach the magazine(s) spring, which may have taken a set.

The follower is green plastic.

And the mags are spot welded shut. 1970's style. Can brush em but not take apart. UNLESS....I haven't looked at unscrewing the button......hmmmmmmmmmm

It's a common problem with High Standards, sad to say.

The most frequent cause of such problems is the magazine. There are lots of good answers at: http://users.ntplx.net/~tm/jspacek.htm

Do a search on "magazine," and plan to spend some time reading.

Wolff makes good replacement springs for High Standards, and they can make an enormous difference.

It's always a bad idea to try high velocity ammunition in these pistols: they were made specifically for standard velocity ammunition. The hotter stuff not only wears out springs faster, but can crack the right side of the frame in P.D.Q. order.

Lots of High Standards absolutely will not chamber CCI Green Tag and Standard Velocity rounds, but will handle other brands just fine. My Trophy eats anything. One of my Victors eats just about anything, but occasionally chokes on CCI .22s. The other Victor... Well, the less said, the better.
