hi, i have a ruger old model single six. dovetail rear sight and blade front. how can i make the front sight taller? i read somewhere on the site ( last year) about using pipe/wire insulation. cant remember exactly. any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. im trying to make something that will slip over the front sight ( without drilling through the original) thanks

Check with Ruger, they may have replacement blades in different heights, or rears in different heights, as the rear would be much simpler to replace. If you can get an extra rear, you could file it down to sight in (if the front needs to be taller, the rear needs to be lower to achieve the same thing).

You may be able to modify a different rear sight for using purposes, and save the original for collectibility purposes. Some aftermarket 1911 rear sights may work, you could file it to sight in.

Malamute: i looked at 1911 rear sights on midway.they look like they would work. do you know if the ruger has a " Novack cut" dovetail rear? thanks.

I'm not exactly sure what a Novak cut is, I'm thinking it's the type that sweeps back from the dovetail and needs the slide milled for clearance. I think what you would want is like the Yost-Bonitz retro type, which will be way too tall to start with, or an original style Colt sight. I may be able to dig up an old factory Colt rear to measure. I don't know what the Ruger dovetail size is. It may be worth signing up on the rugerforum.com and asking, Someone there may know exactly what you need for a replacement. You could also look at the Brownells website, and maybe call their tech guys. I'm sure Brownells has more sight options.
