Help! 1981 Charter Arms Undercover .38 spcl question

I recently inherited a 1981 Charter Arms Undercover .38 spcl. It is in excellent shape. Is this gun capable of shooting +p ammo? I'm not a real experienced gun owner, so should I have this checked out by a gun smith prior to shooting it? Also, any other info on this gun would be useful, such as approx value, reliability, etc.

The 1st Generation CA Undercover were NOT rated for +P - it is specifically stated so in the owner's manual. It never hurts - anyone - to have a piece checked by a gun smith before firing - it you don't have much experience, he will not charge much and can explain the function of the piece to you. In excellent shape, As New In the Box (ANIB) these guns are selling between $250 and $285 on the auction sites. They are very well made, very durable, reliable and handy. You're piece was made during the second half of the original Charter Arms Corp. production period. I'm doing some research on serial number vs DOM, if you would be so kind, I'd appreciate knowing the serial number of your piece and how you know it is a 1981 dated piece? Thanks in advance. Also, your piece should have the Stratford CONN barrel address????
