Is it possible to have a 2-3/4" chamber reamed out to 3"? I have an Ithaca 37 with a 3" chamber reciever and wish to get a slug barrel for it. Used 2-3/4" barrels seem to dot the landscape compared to 3" chambered ones. I see that I can get a new one for less than $300 that is fully rifled, but if I could get a 20" smoothbore it could replace the 870 I used to use with buckshot.

Possible? Maybe. Not all barrels have enough metal there to allow lengthening the chamber.

Worthwhile? Maybe. 2 3/4" slugs will take down anything in North America. All 3" slugs will do is go through your money faster and build a flinch more quickly.

I'd go with the 20" smoothbore.

I agree, go with the 20" smoothbore. Like said above, 2 3/4" slugs will take down anything you hit with it. (and your shoulder will thank you, believe me)

Find a 3" chambered 870 or the like and you'll be happier. 2 3/4" slugs kill just as dead with out the recoil. I have recut the forcing cones in a lot of 37's and most don't have enough metal to safely lengthen the chamber.

More Problems.

Most of your 2 3/4" guns have an ejection port that is too small for a 3" hull to clear. I cut my teeth on a Model 37. When they changed from paper hulls to plastic, ( yeah I'm old), some brands of 2 3/4" wouldn't eject because the hull were too long. You would be better off to buy a 3" gun.
