Hi all,

I was looking at scopes for my .22lr and got directed to the Leupold VX1 2-7x28mm for rimfires. Then casting around the web, I saw the VX1 2-7x33mm for rifles proper. What is more there is very little difference in price.

What do people reckon about using the 33mm scope on a .22lr? Also would mean more flexibility in terms of putting the scope on other rifles.

Also, what about other makes that have similar performance, spec and price range.

Thanks in advance,

Scrummy

The rimfire scopes have the parallax set for shorter distance. Usually 50 to 65 yards. I think the Leupold is set at 65 yards on the rimfire scope and 100 or 150 yards on the rifle scope.

There is nothing wrong with putting on a 33mm obj. scope on a .22, if it is just for hunting you don't need a big obj. that changes the handling of a .22 rifle. I don't like them larger than 32mm on my .22 hunting rifle, but that is just me. I have a Weaver 3-9x32 AO rimfire scope on my .22 rifle for hunting and the target range.

If it was mostly for a 100 yard target range, I would get a more powerful scope with a obj. 40mm or larger.

Scopes in that price range that I would look at along with the Leupold, which is a good choice are Weaver rimfire and Nikon.

I have always used standard big game scopes on my 22's. I'd use the standard scope. It doesn't hurt a thing and gives you more options to use it later on a centerfire. I'd much rather use a centerfire on a 22 than try to go the other way.

You can use the Leupold centerfire model on the rimfire, and you can use the rimfire on a centerfire. I like the shorter parallax setting for the rimfire, but prefer the standard duplex (as opposed to fine) that comes on the centerfire model.
The Weaver rimfire scopes are very nice, and also will work on centerfires.

I have a Redfield 2x7 on my 22 mag. And rarely shoot past 50yds. With it and parallax is no problem. It's a great scope for the money.

I think that is the way to fly as I have the leupold 2x7x33 on my ruger 10-22 and it is a awesome matchup.

Nikon makes a 2-7x32 scope in both shotgun and rifle variants. Their street price is about $150.

Good scopes with a lifetime warranty.

And I posted the killer Nikon P22 2-7x32 turret .22 LR calibrated scope which is a mini TARGET scope. The 2x28 Leupold rimfire scope is a sporting class act . The Weaver Rimfire 1" scopes are very good bargains BTW. Extremely bright!

I was going to buy a redfield 2-7x, but found a burris fullfield 2-7 for a lot less at optics planet. so I bought one of those and picked up a sightron s1 in 4-12x at the same time. I like the sightron a lot more. you can pick up one of those in 2-7x for about 120 shipped. That would be my vote.

the newest vx1 is a much improved scope over the old vxI. It now has click windage and elevation ajustments and the same glass as the older vxII. Its a much better scope then any of the redfield models. Redfields use the same glass as the rifleman series and the mechanics of the windage and elevation ajustments is not the same as any leupold and if the two expamples i had are typical they come up lacking in tracking and repeatability. there a decent scope in that price range with a bit better optics then a nikon prostaff but the prostaffs are mechanicaly a better scope. The burris full fields are a good compromise in that price range. If it were my money id look closely at the newest generation of leupold vx1. Watch it though as alot of companys are closing out the older friction adj. scopes and theres a huge differnce.

What he said^^....I bought the Leupold while my buddy bought the Redfield. The Leupold is clearer, brighter, and has slightly finer crosshairs.
