Forgive me for my noob questions, but I am new* to revolver ownership and this forum.
1) I bought a new GP100 a few years ago, but hadnt been able to take it out shooting but once. I have noticed that the wood in the handle looks to be getting dry and faded. What is recommended for me to get it back to its new like sheen?

2) I know this has probably been asked a million times. Can I shoot .38 Special out of this weapon (.357 GP100)?

Thanks all in advance!

.38 special is no problem in a GP-100. If you shoot a lot of .38s and want to switch to .357 you may find them a little sticky inserting and extracting because the .38s leave behind a ring of fouling a little farther back then the .357s. Nothing a brass brush can't handle.

I'll defer on the wood but there are plenty of options. Carnuba wax?

If you look up forum member "41magnum" on rugerforum.com, he makes some really nice wood inserts for very reasonable prices. I plan on having him custom make me some very shortly.

Be careful of cheap .38 wadcutter ammo. It'll fowl up your GP100 something awful. If you don't take your revolver to the range often, you can still dry-fire practice it as much as you want.

If your wood inserts are looking a bit ragged, pull them off and treat them with a good quality, oil base, wood stain. Let them dry and rub down with a lint free rag.

Shoot the dang thing...
The oil from your hands, if you shoot it at least weekly like any good GP owner should, will keep the wood shining.

+1 for FoMoGo comment!!!
the oil from your hand will shine & darken the wood .
i look at my rugers & can sure tell which ones get shot the most!!!

Actually, the oil from you hands is acidic and may not have the intended affect of "polishing" those wooden inserts. I would even suggest rubbing them down after a range session with one of the aforementioned furniture oils.

Also, you will find all the wood inserts you could ever want at rugerforum.net. After you register and post a couple of time you can access the Buy/Sell/Trade forum where there will likely be a couple of active threads pertaining to GP100 inserts.

There is a guy at the rugerforum.net (Yes, there are two rugerforums .com and .net) His name is R Nettles. He is a good guy. He did the wood in his SP101 by just sanding off the old finish and applying some Tru-oil that you can buy at any Wal-mart in the hunting section. The wood looks GREAT!

And, if you want to dress them up even more? +1 to the .41 magnum reccomendation. He makes inserts for SP101 s and GP100s. Good work at an affordable price.
