Picked up a new Ruger GP100 today. Ive been eyeing it for a while. Was looking at the Smith 686 and GP100. Figured I’d go with the Ruger as all our other Ruger guns are great.

Looking forward to shooting it this weekend. I got some .38 special and .357 magnum to try out.

Always wanted a nice big revolver. It has some serious heft to it when you hold it. Should be a lot of fun to shoot!

Nice GP! I have a 4 incher that makes .357 very easy on the recoil, almost non existent. I imagine the 6 inch would have even less recoil.

Yeah I’m curious to see how much recoil there is with this gun. It’s pretty heavy. Has to soak it up pretty good.

Does yours have the Hogue grip or older grips with the wood inserts? Was thinking of trying the older style grips for fun one day.

I like the older style Letts grip with the inserts on my 4" GP100 but prefer the stock Hogue on my 5" GP. Either will handle the recoil well but the 5" feels better balanced to me with the larger stock Hogue grip. Enjoy the new GP!

You will enjoy it. I picked up a 5 inch not long ago and I run it hard with full house .357 loads. Very tame and accurate revolver. I hardly ever run .38s through her. I did change the springs out to improve the trigger pull...

many many rounds through mine. they do indeed soak up recoil. Love it.
Did some polishing of the internals, a wolff spring kit, and put a weigand mount on mine. Currently it wears a vortex venom 3moa. but used to have a scope mounted.
pinging steel at 200 yards with a 357 always gets attention at the range.

I have a 6”. Very serious looking and feeling weapon. Mine was made in 1990 so it has the older Lett grips. Much prefer them to the Hogue. The Hogue just throws off the look of the gun. They’re a real abomination on the 3” models. They feel okay but they would be the first thing I would replace if I bought a newer model.

What brand of springs and lb rating did you go with?

I have a set of the older grips on order. I prefer the looks of the original grips too. The Hogue grip feels great though.

Congratulations on your new GP100.
I swear! Auto Communista gets me every time…

I recently bought a lightly used 4.2” with the hogue grips. Yeah, they aren’t sexy, but man are they nice when shooting magnum loads. I really enjoy shooting .357 mag from mine. Still learning the gun and it’s trigger. I swapped the factory front sight for a Hi-Viz fiber optic sight and I really like it with the white pipe installed.

It still has the original sight in that photo.

Enjoy your new GP100.

If you happen to have exactly the right shaped and sized hand to match the aggressive finger grooves of the factory Hogues, then they’re great.

But for many they suck buttermilk.

Now that you mention it, this is the first finger grooved grip that matches my hands. It feels great to me. I considered changing it out but only because I like wood grips. I think I will leave it.

I got the set from Wilson Combat. I put the 10# hammer and trigger in mine first off. The 10# hammer ignites my reloads just fine. I did have some light strikes with creedmor sports off the shelf ammo but as long as my reloads run I will leave it...

I forgot to mention I put a set of adjustable fiber optic sights on the rear, and a front fiber optic sight, as well. Haven’t shot it to zero it in yet, but man, are these new sights a BIG improvement over the factory. I had a fiber optic front sight in there first and it was better, but adding the rear set really made the sight picture pop.
