So heres the deal....

My buddie just got his income taxes...like 4,000.00 or something. We go to the gun store cause hes looking for a cheap, 9mm carbine (sub-2000) or something like it.

So we are looking around...(how many stories on this board start like this) I see a prestine M1 Garand in 30-06 on sale for 650.00 appearantly the owner has it on consignment

I have learned quite a bit from this site (tons actually) and have wanted one for awhile now. Historical,Functional,Robust,Efficient,Best Iron sites and of course *PING*
So I pick it up and of course fall in love. This is the first time I have held one and everything I have heard so far has been true. Ah the wood and ooo the sites. Well anyway I dont have the cash, but am considering using my Rem 870 MM as a partial trade and then coughing up the rest. Its not like I have money to burn and the woman dont like the idea but still gave me the "go ahead do whatever you want"(you know the tone guys) and Im seriously considering it.

* - I love my 870MM it was exactly what I wanted when I got it. It would be hard to part w/ it and I initially planned to keep it forever. Its my only current shotgun.
*- The only rifle I currently have is a Marlin 336.

I wasn't really in the market for a new gun right now. Is the 650 price tag on this rifle not as good of a price as I believed it to be.

Im just not sure..

I would never sell or trade a gun that I really loved as you stated with your 870MM. I only get rid of guns that I don't care for, but that's just me. Some people love to trade and change things out all the time so you need to decide if that is you, otherwise keep your 870 and wait until you can afford something else that you want. I would bet that if you get rid of your 870 you will start missing it real soon. ;)

I'm of the opinion...

guns are meant to be shot. I think it's pointless to own a gun you aren't going to shoot. I can appreciate guns for their asthetic value and all, but it's the practicality and ingenuity of machinery that does it for me. Function over form.

On that note, who cares if it's "pristine", and why shell out the extra bucks for one that's perfect? If you want a garand, pick up a dinged-up old shooter from CMP and have FUN with it. That way you can keep your beloved 870 MM, too.

Snakeyes: Nope not Legendary guns of the west, and Layaway is not an option as it is there from consignment.

Mobile: Oh, I do intend to shoot it. It was built to be shot. I would try to keep it in as good a shape as possible though.

Thanks for the info guys.

Forget Attachments. Im sure I could get just as attached to a Garand as I am to the 870MM (maybe more:)

Yeah, you'll love the Garand. It's impossible not to.

However, if you can be a bit patient, take the steps to qualify for the CMP and order one from there. The one you're looking at probably came from the CMP at one point, and it's not that difficult to qualify.

By the time you can order it, you'll have had time to save more money and hopefully not have to part with a gun you love. And you can get it for considerably less than $650, even with joining a club. If you trade the 870, you'll have to get another one someday.

Check out www.odcmp.com if you haven't already.

I agree with all the above. Keep the 870 and get a CMP Garand for @ $500. Gun Shop trade-in deals, IMO, favor the shop to an EXTREME degree. Mike

trade in the 336

keep the 870

Didn't hear you expressing any attachment to the 336, besides, once you have the Garand, you have 30 caliber covered....

I wouldn't trade my only shotgun.

Go with the CMP. I picked up a nice Garand through the CMP that had been loaned to the Danish Government, it came with a nice VAR barrel for $450. Wood is in decent shape.

Borrow some money from your buddy who just got 4 grand back!

Only if you KNOW you can pay it back though, disputes over money can get ugly between friends.
