2 UCLA Profs Quit Over Gun Incident

In all seriousness, what does getting shot have to do with art? I'll be the first to admit I lack appreciation of some of the finer points of modern art, but what am I missing here?

Hey, if getting shot is art, and art makes money, I'd be rich!

Perhaps they will be interested in joining their friends on the happy trail to Canada.

Point 'em north and watch 'em go.

We should probably suspend the student for poor gun handling :) That way he can get to the range and someone will teach him its not a good thing to " point a loaded handgun at his head and pull the trigger."

My favorite part of the whole thing is the part at the end about how he held the loaded gun up to his head and pulled the trigger. Either he's a crappy shot or it wasn't really loaded.

Art is useless. No artist can discover a cure for a sickness nor invent a useful implement for everyday life. Engineering over architecture anyday. I am still looking for that instant in my life when taking those art classes will come into good use (outside of interpreting works of art, which is a wasteful pasttime). OTOH, physics comes in handy alot of times.

Just MHO.

Art is useless? Only in the way that beauty is useless. If that were true a custom rifle with AAA walnut would be no more attractive than a Nambu pistol.

I'm not a fan of some of the junk that is passed off as art today. To me lots of "performance art" falls into that class. But unless you have no opinion about what looks good, I doubt you believe art is useless. IMHO too.

I should've said "The pursuit or study of art as a career is useless" . Lucrative? Sure! But if not for it's patrons, art is nothing. Science just waits to be discovered as it exists. Art exists only because we want it to.

If we somehow stripped the world of all works of art, life will go on. Take away scientific works and...

Just MHO.

Roadshow

Anyone know where I could apply for a grant or subsidy?I`ve been involved with perfoming arts since I wuz in grammar skul(as a musician)I think I could BS with the best of them , if somebody could foot the bill.

OK, I see what you mean SwWnMe. As for me, I have no problem with people making, performing, displaying, doing, or creating, art. I just feel the taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill for what amounts to a subsidy of trendyness.

Griz..ditto that....I don't want my taxes to pay for some Robert Maplethorpe exibit....or the ballet or any of that stuff.....I say if people want to see it,they should pay for it..after all my taxes don't pay Bruce Springsteen's salary...he's rich because people LIKE his music, and pay to see him...if you suck, you suck..not my fault....as for these profs......they have plenty of time for therapy now to get of the trauma of this horrible event.....

Kinetic Art

Wish I had the book available to scan in the cartoon by David Horsey.

Scene shows the three NEA (Nat'l Endowment for the Arts) bubbas (in dark glasses, berets, etc) sitting at a conference table. In front of them is a crew-cutted colonel with a pointer showing a picture of a new bomber with a $multimillion price tag:

"So, just imagine this complex work of Kinetic Sculpture interacting with the public living spaces"

"We love it! We'll take it!"

Glad to see them go

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't hire them back later when they want to return

You mean, when they discover that Righteous Indignation doesn't pay for a new Toyota Prius? :p

Oh No! two flaming artsy fartsy college professors no longer making their vast and indespensible contributions to society?- I guess I'll just have to pull the covers back over my head in the morning because there's nothing left to live for- but then again I'm forgetting the famouse lines on the Faber statue in Animal House, "Knowledge Is Good" :neener:
