Best A2 Style AR-15

Sorry for the double post/ bump, but we went to the gun shops today. The first place we went to (the one that was smokey) actually had a no smoking sign on the door, which blew my mind. Anywho, I immediately saw an AR-15 upon entering the store. It had a RRA lower and supposedly a Bushmaster upper. According to the guy working the counter, it was made by their gunsmith after a customer had wanted to get an AR with a flat top receiver. He had traded out rifles (or something like that), and the gunsmith at the shop used the remaining lower and upper to make a rifle. It had a dissipator length barrel and handguard. Out the door price was $625, plus tax. He said it was unfired, I could not verify that, however. The gun charged smoothly and did not seem to have any fit and finish problems from looking at it. The major thing against it is the dissipator set up. Again, a 20 in barrel is what I am looking for.

The next stop was at a gunshop in Claycomo, Missouri. I bought my Saiga from this shop. The weapons he carries are all made by Olympic. He did not have a 20 in A2 rifle in stock, though he did have carbines. When I asked about Olympic's reputation, he said that they had been around longer than Bushmaster, and that most of the complaints about them came from the 1980's, when they sold cheaply made ARs. The price he could sell a brand new Olympic 20 in A2 for was in the upper $700's.

So far, what do you guys think?

Stag, S&W, or CMMG.

I'd stay away from DPMS, Olympic.

I'd stay very far away from Model 1 sales.

I'd run like hell from Century and Vulcan/Hesse.

What is the problem with a forged lower Olympic if you're using the gun for a range toy and -MAYBE- home defense?

Another option: Drive 20 miles east on I-70 to Grain Valley MO and buy a new Bushmaster A2 from Mark Kitterman for $865.

A lot of folks have purchased CMMG guns from a pickle barrel at the last 2 RK gunshows in KC. Guns were in the 500 to 600 dollar range. They've said good things about their guns even though they weren't perfect specimens. That might be an option too.

I don't think an OLY lower would be a bad choice just for a range gun, if the rest of the gun was acceptable.

Would Kitterman be able to get me a 20" A2 DCM rifle? All I saw on his website was an offer for Bushmaster M4 style carbines.

All my Olys have been great in fit and finish , yes they di have some severe quality control issues in the 80's and with those crappy cast receivers they used to make . Other wise they are quite good now .

I assume so, he is advertising the M4 rifles at a slightly higher price, so the A2 he is referring to on his website is different. However, the best thing is to call and ask him (number on the website) what he can do. I assume he can get any Bushmaster in the catalog.
I've purchased a bolt rifle from him and he's a good guy in my experience. He also buys police surplus and might be able to hook you up that way.
Not that you couldn't do better somewhere else...just saying...it's one option.

If you want to know about a rifle, want to save a little money and want to have fun and pride of ownership, you might buy a stripped lower and a parts kit and build your own lower and look around for an upper. It might be hard to find a good A2 upper in 20" but you can easily find a flat top upper with a detachable carry handle.

If you take your time, read the book and follow the instructions, assembling a lower receiver is not hard and fun too. My nephew built his in under two hours with help from a friend of mine that had built two previous ones. Might have taken three hours otherwise.
