Just for fun, I decided to try some slugs in my H&R Topper Deluxe Classic 20Ga, to both see what the recoil was like, and what the accuracy was
Distance; 50 yards to target, heavy, tall sand and gravel berm behind target stand
Wind; WSW, gusts to 20 MPH
Ammunition; Federal TruBall 3/4 Oz 2 3/4" shells, Brenneke Heavy Field Short Magnum 2 3/4 1 Oz
Recoil was stout, but not unpleasant from both shells, the Brenneke shells were more accurate (groups were 1" or so at 50 yards) and thanks to the heavy berm, I was actually able to recover two of the Brenneke and three of the Federal slugs
The results were...interesting... to say the least, I'll let the pictures do the talking here;
Federal TruBall;
Brenneke;
I thought it was absolutely amazing at how the Federals simply *pancaked* when they hit the berm, and the Brenneke's held together pretty well, they're still identifiable as slugs, the Federals are just *mush*, both punched through the heavy "Steel-Ply" plywood panels easily (the staple gun had trouble sticking staples in the target paper because the plywood panels were so heavy), but once the slugs hit dirt, it's clear how their structural integrity fared
Oh, and I don't think I'll be using slugs in my TDC any more, they left the bore *FILTHY*, took a half hour to get most of the lead fouling out, and there's still about 3% left, I need to pick up a Tornado brush tomorrow
I also tried a 3" magnum shell of #2 Buck (Federal), and the 3" Magnum buckshot shell had less felt recoil than the 2 3/4" slug shells, the 3" Magnum buck shells were actually reasonably pleasant to shoot
