What is a good rifle to buy in this profile? I like my Stag carbine, but have an itch for a 20" rifle with open sights. I know Stag, DPMS, Bushmaster and Rock River sell them. Are there others that are good? What is the best?

Depends on your budget. I've always been happy with RRA. If your just running open sights than your not looking for a 1/2 moa barrel. Honestly with those three brands I've Never had a hiccup. But your going to get a bunch of colt fanboys that are going to swear thats the only gun to buy. I have ARs on both ends of the spectrum and would be pleased with any of them. However if money is less an issue, There are some really nice ARs from other makers. I personally would build my own. I think you get the best product for your money that way. And building an AR is soooooooo easy. Basic tools and an armorers wrench.

Edit. Never owned a stag. But hear good things

Good for what?

I have a PSA A4 with a FN chrome lined barrel, and it is a great reliable fighting rifle that has pretty decent accuracy, but it is not necessarily what I would recommend to a guy who is wanting a pure paper puncher or that sort of thing, where accuracy is the paramount concern. Then again a gov't profile barrel isn't what I'd recommend for pure paper punching/target use in the first place. The fact that you're wanting that profile suggests more of a 2A purpose/fighting role... but a little guidance on what you want the rifle to be able to do would help.

I built a Del-ton A2 20 inch from a kit. The upper was assembled. It shot under MOA at sight in. They buy their barrels from a major manufacturer. It looks like good quality and functions well. I think the same could be said of most reputable manufacturers. Most parts are from the same suppliers and made to identical specs. QC and barrels are what is critical as well as the bolt and extractor.

I would leave of DPMS and the new Bushmaster (if they exist) as I have seen to many problems in last 5 years with those brands. Gov,t profile 20" barrels are good and can be accurate. I would add S&W and others as choices.

Personally I would try an FN for a gov 20, or a Colt if they make one. I have owned 3 BCM 20" Gov uppers. They appeared to be of very good quality. Accuracy was about 1.5 - 1.75 MOA with match ammo. Only shortcoming was they were not functionally reliable with the S&B 55 grain 223 ammo as short stroking was a problem.

I do plan to buy another BCM in the future, but it will be a 16" mid which I have experience with already and have found to be 100% reliable with everything I have tried, and accurate with the BFH barrel.

RRA doesn't make a gov profile 20, it is a HBAR. In my experience they extremely accurate at ~ 3/4 MOA, some better. I have also found them to reliably function on everything I ever tried, 556 and 223.

Is the $150 they want for the BCM handguards a good price? That seems high to me (but I really don't know).

I don't know; they offer the 2 piece handguard and the 2 piece "tactical" handguard, $160/$150.

What makes a better handguard better?

I am guessing the "Tactical" handguards will be similar to Knights Armanent KAC-RAS two piece railed handguards.

My experience with two BCM uppers have been mixed. Both had issues, they fixed the 16" very quickly and it shoots great, the 20" they had for a month and basically did nothing to correct the issue. If I get another upper, I think I'll try another brand.

midway usa had a 20" government profile kit for $424.99. I really want this kit except for that I want it with the fixed carrying handle. buy yourself a stripped lower and you're good to go.

My experience with Del-ton basically mirrors D2wimgs. I built an A3 style on the cheap with a non chrome lined 20" barrel.

The parts in my kit kit all looked good. Trigger was a typical gritty heavy mil spec type. Upper was assembled when I purchased it.

My best 5 shot 100 yard group is 1-1/8" off a rest. This is with open sights. I'd probably shrink that some using a scope, but I have no desire to. I don't do a lot of bench shooting with this rifle.

My only real gripe was shipping time. It's been a few years so I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it was along time. When I'd call they kept saying they were waiting on barrels.

For the money and for what I do with it it's fine. I'd buy another one if the opportunity arose and I knew I could get it without too much wait.

i was considering building one but want the fixed carrying handle. I'm pretty particular about my parts and would prefer them to be matching brands (because colors/finishes can vary from brand to brand like receivers) they offered an assembled a2 upper but said they haven't gotten any in over 4 years. now i'm stuck buying a stripped upper and parting it together costing more. I have been keeping my eyes on them too for a couple of years.

A2 ar15

Just built a kit using a Bushmaster Rec on sale from Brownells for 49.00 + ship, transfer etc and a Blackthorne A2 kit. http://blackthorneproducts.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_16&products_id=278.

looks great and I have about 525 in it. Came with a heavy barrel like an H-Bar, shot it the first time this Sunday while testing my new Rem 700 LR, sighted it in at 100, groups were ragged 5 shot hole groups that could be covered by a quarter, shot the 300 target and printed MOA with 10 yr old cheap steel case 62 gr Wolf ammo without scope. Going to mount a scope on it and reload some match bullets and see what it will do. built it to be a plinker, but looking like it is going to be something more.

what brand is it or is it in house? very good price for pretty much a whole gun minus the stripped lower. Pix and quality? I already bought the delton but could manage a future build. (haven't bought a stripped a2 upper to swap out with the flat top it comes with)
