I'm currently building an AR and thinking of going with a 20" upper, and I'm trying to keep it light, so I really want a pencil barrel. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any of the top-tier manufacturers make one; BCM only offers government profile, and DD and Spike's don't even make anything with a barrel that long. Are they ANY top-quality manufacturers that currently offer 20" lightweight uppers, or do I have to buy a used Colt A1 upper or have a gunsmith put something together for me?

BCM makes a great AR-15. IIRC the weight difference between a 20" Government profile barrel and lightweight/pencil profile is 0.3lbs (2.5 vs 2.2lbs). My 20" government profile rifle is one of my favorite AR's to shoot.

If you want to really drop the weight of your AR, try to find a Cav Arms MKII poly lower. That lower is a full pound lighter than a standard A2 lower.

Citadel (subsidiary of Kreiger) also makes one. I paid $100 at a recent gun show.
