I have been looking at marlin lever guns in .35 remington. I like the looks of the XLR (stainless and laminated) but the C looks handier. XLR comes with a 24" barrel and the C is 20". Is the ballistic advantage of the longer barrel worth having a more cumbersome rifle?

The 336C is fine, but if you want to be a serious 200 yard threat with a 35, you need a hot loaded bullet & 4" of extra barrel will help a bit too. I don't usually see deer past 150, so my 20" barrel and regular factory Winchester 200 grain PP is fine for me.

The 35 Rem is one of those cartridges that does not benefit appreciably from the longer barrel.
I reload 35 Rem with the FTX bullet for a guy who has an XLR, and it's a beautiful rifle.

As USSR mentioned, the longer sight radius may be beneficial, but the shorter barrel is handier under most conditions.
