I began checking my manuels last night to see what was recommended for some 200 gr. RN Lead I ordered/received from Laser-cast to be used for bowling pins in 1911-.45ACP. In going through 7 manuels/load-notes I found -0- info for putting together loads with the 200 gr. RNlead. There is plenty of info on 200 gr. LSWC & LWC .Apparently these are used much more often but any of you guys/girls have any starting info on the round nose lead or favorite loads or do I just take an educated guess and start very slowly? I've got e-mail into Laser-cast but they probably won't get back to me before next week and I'd like to get these made up this weekend.Any help most appreciated.

200 rnl

Hey Kimbernut:

You can use the data for the 200swc at starting levels with impugnity.

You will probably need to work up carefully to your final load because you'll need near 1000 fps to do the job on the pins.

If you have some N310, you could start 4.5 gr and work up.

If you're not wedded to the round nose shape, it's been my experience that almost any onther config will perform better on the pins.

Cheers,

Norm

Looking back at an ancient reloading guide (circa 1937), I find 200 gr hardball listed and a 200gr (203gr actually) RN B&M lead bullet. Most of the powders listed are long out of production, BUT I do find STARTING loads of 3.5gr of Bullseye for both bullets and a starting load of 5.5 Unique for the metal case bullet. Now this is an old book and those powders MIGHT be a little different than today's version. They list the velocity of 635 and 665 fps out of a 5 inch barrel. Be really careful here!!! Hope this starts to fill in the gaps. Good Luck, Quantrill

Per Norm, they load very similar to 200 gr SWC. I keep some on hand for unthroated guns and use the same powder charge as for "No 68" SWCs.

You will note that they have a slight shoulder, almost like a SWC. Seat to place it just out of the casemouth by .020" -.030". Chamber check and testfire before running off a lot.

Thanks, Guys! I knew I could count on you to help me get started. This will help alot.

Norm, welcome to The High Road. A lot of good folks here- you'll like it.
No,I'm not wedded to the round nose shape we're just dating for a while.(I've got 1000 to go through or trade them off if I don't like them). May use some for light .45 Colt loads as well. Thanks again ,guys. Have a great weekend! Go Shootin'!
