One of the best way to promote the "Right to Bear Arms" is to introduce a newbie to the gun world. That's right...take someone out to the shooting range for their very first "gun experience". Go over with them the basic 4 rules of gun safety, etc.

Can you think of any other way to double our numbers? I took someone out yesterday to the range for their very first gun-firing experience. The kid (24 years old) loves it and plans on getting his first gun and CCW.

Make this a priority this month....(yup...set this goal for this month) and post the experience here....and be part of our THR "2010 mentor" list.

Let's see by the end of the year how many posting we have on this thread.
 
Good plan, Prof. While in college, I joined a greek organization. We required our associate members (prospective members) to get the signature of each of the active members. This required each associate member and active member to take the initiative to meet one another prior to the formal initiation process. To earn my signature I required each of the associate members to attend a range session (fees and ammo covered by me) and then discuss why they liked or disliked the experience. I also gave them the option to not participate, but none of them chose that route. In the end, I gained a bunch of compitent shooting buddies. Now it looks like I may have a new goal for 2010. I hope this thread finds success ;)
 
Executed a surprising example of this just this last Sunday (3rd Jan 2010).

Former Army Ranger that had been deployed to Iraq. Has NEVER been on a firing range that wasn't military training. Did not have any plans to purchase a firearm.

Took him out to the range, brought out my XCR, PTR-91, AK, PLR-16, and a bunch of other weapons.

After firing the first mag, he told me he had decided to buy an AR-15.

At the end of the rifle range session, he told me he had changed his mind. He was going to save up and get a PTR-91 like mine!

And at the end of the pistol range session, he told me he decided he was going to get his TX CHL!

After firing the shotgun I brought, he... swore vehemently and jumped up and down rubbing his shoulder :D

I loaded a few 3.5" super magnum shells just for him. It wasn't a COMPLETE gag on him, as I had already promised I'd fire the same shells. Those things leave an impression on people. Literally. As in now, 4 days later, I still have the bruise in my shoulder from that.

He did get a kick out of it... literally and figuratively... :D
 
I signed up for my CCW class. After hearing about it, my father did the same, and he told some people at his work and a few of them may be signing up as well.

As for being a mentor, I'm always the general mentor type, not just for firearms but for many other things. People just seem to inherently trust me. It's odd, but I certainly won't betray that trust.
 
Hey guys... I know there's hundreds of you out there...that love guns. Any more takers on this idea of mentoring? We are half-way through the month of January!!
 
Got one - there is a guy at work I have been talking to and getting him interested in guns - he used to have a .22 rifle back in the day, anyway - took him to the range to shoot yesterday and before we left I mentioned that I had to put a couple of guns 'on the boards' and he ended up buying one of the revolvers I was going to sell. (Yeah - I gave him a good deal on it - could have gotten more - but like they say "put your money where your mouth is")
 
I've got a maybe! My golf buddy has been hearing about my gun purchases and range time when we're on the course. He's a retired AF NG guy who was on the flight line and never had much interest in guns. I final assembled a mossberg .22 that he brought here from NJ and couldn't get back together. The other day he informed me that he's thinking of applying for a GFL. He's talking about getting a pocket pistol. I'm still working on him.
 
Got one, maybe two. My eldest son, 28, just bought his first gun, a Ruger LCP. A fellow worker wants me to go with him to the gun shop and help him select a gun. He really likes the Ruger LCR.
 
That's good to hear. Think of it this way....mentoring is one way to create exponential growth of people of love guns. One guy introduces the gun culture to two. Those two in turn introduces the culture to four...and so on..and so on.
 
What a great idea

It's such a simple concept and yet I have ignored the potential thus far...

I'm looking forward to re-introducing my friends to firearms with an improved approach.

Ok...it's February 1. Let's not let this idea die. Any other takers out there?

If you can't get a "virgin" shooter to try out firearms, how about convincing a fellow shooter to actually get their CCW. Yes...do it this month.
 
I'm a big proponent of mentoring. A couple of weeks ago I helped with an intro to firearms class at our club. We had a few kids come through, we taught them safe gun handling and some basic marksmanship with air rifles.
 
I've taught three women from my church to shoot; all three have gone on to successfully take the Texas CHL test. Two of them now carry; the third just "hasn't gotten around to sending in the paperwork yet."

I've got three invitations to the gun range extended to friends in the area. All three have promised to take me up on it when we can work out schedules and weather. I'll provide the guns and range pass and all the .22 rimfire they can shoot. If they want to shoot anything else, they need to pick it up because all I have is my reloads. I have only had one whoops in three years, and that was 2 years, ten months ago. While I'll take my own safety and liability into my own hands, I won't put my liability in someone elses'. The exception is my .41 Blackhawk - I can't find factory ammo for that so I'll let them shoot my reloads there if they want.
