Greetings,

Many of you have been following the posts that MacPelto and I have made about the UT Rifle & Pistol Club. This is a Registered Student Organization at UT, and we are authorized to use the on-campus NROTC Shooting Range (right next to the Gregory Gym, down the street from the main library).

Up until recently, the range got about two kids a night, mostly ROTC. Since MacPelto and I began recruiting, we've swelled to 20-30 kids per night. We have a good number of regulars who are forming a competitive team, and get 6-12 total newbies on the average evening.

However, our current Range Staff is not sufficient to maintain these capacity crowds for the long haul. We have four main RSOs and three Assistant RSOs, and we're getting worn pretty ragged. We'd like to add at least one Assistant RSO per night.

If you live in the Austin area, have a firm grasp of basic gun safety and technique, and can coach at the UT range from 6:30PM-9PM twice a month (or ideally four times a month), we could really, really use your help. Our current staff is mainly retirees and student veterans, but we're pretty open to anyone who can be a good ambassador for the shooting community.

Please send me a PM if interested.

MENTORS: If coaching is too large of a committment for you, don't fret, you can also help out as a Mentor. If you compete in any Austin-area matches on a quasi-regular basis, and wouldn't mind having a college kid tag along, drop us a line. We'll take your info, and physically post it at the range (not online, just papercopy).

Example: "Pistol Silhouette: Bob Q. Smith (512) 555-5555 [email protected] -- Saturday matches, bring $4 for entry fee, ammo on me"

No obligation, you can turn down or accept any request you get from our members. Our Mentor Coordinator is fellow THR member UTSwabbie. Please PM him if you are interested in becoming a Mentor.

We're accomplishing great things at the UTRPC. Our current tally is 70 club members, and we've had about 200 individual visitors in the past seven weeks. Where else do you have the chance to directly help young people learn safe shooting? Two hours a week (or every other week): the time it takes to watch one silly Hollywood film...

Now is an especially important time, as we expect full capacity crowds (20-30 per night) for the next several weeks, due to the large and attention-getting courses that 2nd Amendment Sister will be teaching this coming weekend.

Thanks for any support you can provide,

-MV

Just like to add that we have a great bunch of students here. All of the current coaches and RSO's have done a tremendous job with producing safe shooters given the amount of newbies that show up every night. Also, there is a large interest in students with other shooting events and competitive shooting that the UT Range can't provide (only capable of supporting firearms of .22 caliber and air). Working with students is sure to be rewarding to both mentor and students.

Congrats to both of you for doing what sounds like a great job. My son is in his second year there (architecture major) and I've passed along a link to the club. Don't know how soon his current schedule of classes and work will allow him to get over and check it out but he really sounds interested.

Matthew,

I just completed a state certified firearms instructor school (in addition to my CHL Instructor's Certificate) so I can help out on my off nights. send me an email (or we can meet up when you get the Henry) and we can discuss more.

I'd like to thank Spreadfire and anybody else who can help us out.

It sounds pathetic, but even one night a month would be helpful. We have literally had to turn eager new shooters away for lack of available supervision on some nights. UT Austin is known for being a liberal place, but the positive reaction here is amazing, and it would be a shame to let it go to waste. We have, in basically one semester, gone from MatthewVanitas and myself to 70 paid members, a burgeoning pistol team, and literally hundreds of people who came in to try it and left with a positive attitude.

Again, thanks in advance to all who can help.

Mac

Great job and keep up the great work. As a reminder to all in the Austin area these new people are the future of our sport. Those that can should pitch in and help where they can. I would but I'm 600 miles from Austin and its not like its just a short trip to the store. Yuma AZ is closer to me then Austin is.

I'll seriously consider it. UT is not that far from me. Is the range open for supervisors too?

Is the range open for supervisors too?

Short answer: Yes. Do not try to bring your own guns on campus right away, however. Because it is a University, there are certain procedures that must be observed, and we absolutely do not want to get operations shut down.

Damn I used to go to UT. I would have joined in a heartbeat if I knew about something like this 3 years ago.
