I guess I'm starting it this year! Unfortunately, I missed an opportunity on another one at 400 yards (Couldn't get set up fast enough) just prior to dropping this buck. I shot this California black tail Sat. at 80 yards with a 300 Win mag from a custom rifle built on a Mauser action. Shot placement was as close to perfect as possible. I used a Barnes all copper bullet (as required now in California). He ran about 100 yards downhill, then crashed and slid about another 100 yards. The terrain was too rough and steep to use a 4 wheeler to recover him, so it was almost a vertical climb to the road- my thighs are still feeling it 4 days later. While we were there the other 4 guys I was with also got their bucks, as well as a couple of wild pigs, and an unknown amount of ground squirrels with 22's. We also caught a mess of bass which were all released. It was a great time and a new experience using spot and stalk in terrain very different from what we are used to here in the south.
