So far this year I've been handed two pistols, empty mags out and separate, with rounds hiding in the chambers, both weapons are of the type without magazine safeties.
My father saved my later drill sergeant the trouble of being into my head the importance of clearing a weapon by doing it when I was about 7 or so. First time I handled any gun (A Mattel Fanner 50, actually) toy or real, I was to make sure it wasn't loaded. A Fanner 50 had what they called "shootin' shells", small spring loaded plastic pellets that could, potentially, shoot your eye out.
I posted on our store FB page about it because reminders like that deserve repeating.

I have never handed a gun to anyone with out doing a full Armed inspection. Drop the mag and open the action. Only takes a second. Some goes when someone hands me a firearm, full inspection. Even at the range if I hand someone a loaded firearm the action is open and the person receiving the gun is told it is loaded and to acknowledge that with a response.

My local gun store had an overhead mirror in the back corner to watch customers. It had a hole through the center. An employee had used the gun (a used AR back in the AWB era, believe it or not they used to be quite rare) on the indoor range and had left a round chambered but the mag was out. A customer was looking at the rifle and had it pointed at himself in the mirror and squeezed the round off.
I was told that the employee was fired. Idk but that's the story they told.

Worked in a gunshop/pawn shop. The number of "Yep it's unloaded" is shocking. Had one guy shove a Glock at me, I asked he said yep unloaded, I could see the trigger was in the forward position. Had a full mag and on in the chamber. I emptied it gave him th ammo and gun and told him to leave as we where not taking in anymore Glocks. Mainly cause he was an arsehole.

We had a "Jar of Shame". Probably popped out 4 chambered rounds in the past year. At my current gig, we don't even like to see loaded mags come in with a gun.

Scary.

That Hornady looks like the jacket is discolored. Been in there awhile. Or is that the lighting?

"Drop the mag, keeping the weapon pointed in a safe direction, lock the action open in one motion. Visually and physically (with a pinky finger) inspect the chamber for emptiness. " Simple. It seems to fall under the header of common sense...
