Yes and HECK NO. Yes it CAN be done, HECK NO it should not be done. I can kill a deer with my 9mm handgun, but you will never catch me hunting deer with it. Very small caliber (less then 6mm) high speed bullets dump the majority of their energy in the first few inches even with modern bonded bullets, making a pincle thin wound through the rest of the way through their meger penatration. I have seen them tested way too many times before. A larger caliber heavier bullet even with less energy has a greater wounding potential, because they tend to make more tissue damage deeper in the target. I am not a fan of marginal bullets on deer, way too many good options out there, even for the very recoil shy. 243win is a practical minimum, 25-06, 7-08 or 6.5x55 make even more sence if you want to be able to shoot from a wider variety of angles
