A change to a 209 primer system would also require a hammer change as a standard hammer doesn't have a projection to strike the primer. You might want to look at a musket cap conversion if you are interested in a bit more ignition.

Perhaps a call to TC's custom shop could produce something for you.

Hello hubbard outdoor prod. makes an item called a mag spark I have one on my t/c hawken and my t/c white mt. carbine type in mag spark on your search engine and you will find it and you will not need to change the hammer on the gun.

I have a mag spark on my Grey Hawk. The mag spark is about the only way to go. Technically, they're referred to as "fusils". There should be a link to the guy in Alabame who makes them if you search under my name on this forum. They're very effective,(not even a hint of a hangfire) however you MUST use graphite lube or teflon tape or the nipple will stick in your rifle.

Hey..you learn something new every day! :D

I looked at the mag spark at the website. Just curious, how long does it take to replace the fired primer with a new one? It looks like it would be a bit slow in reloading.

Yup-a long process. You have to unscrew the top (cap assembly), pull the old primer, insert a new one, then screw the top back on.
Still, it beats having a Pyrodex hangfire (which my CCI primers always do after about 10-15 shots in my T/C).

Musket Caps

I think - you can get a musket cap nipple for your Hawken. This should solve your hang fire problem. Also, using black powder instead of Pyrodex will improve your results. It has a much lower ignition temp.

You problem is likely due to crud getting in the flash channel. Try snapping a cap without loading every 10 shots or so. Should blow out the crud.

Yup, you can definitely get musket nipples in the 1/4x28 thread that T/C uses for most rifles. I bought one for versatility, then I price compared musket caps to 209 primers and #11's. :what:
I think the local Walmart wants $6-7 per 100 for them, with #11's and 209's running about $2-3 per 100.
