I'm getting that urge to get started on a winter rifle project and have been thinking about a 22-250 AI because I don't have one or a 220 Swift, also because I don't have one. I'm not really interested in the WSSM's. What's your opinion on which is the best and also any downside if they have any?

I bought a 220 Swift because I liked the ruger 77 heavy barrel I saw in the chambering. Most of my loads have been at 22/250 level and it has killed quite a variety of game and varmints. Nothing wrong with the cartridge although it is in much more limited distribution than the 22/250.

they claim about 100 fps more velocity for the Swift 40 grain bullet over the 22/250

The Swift has more headroom if you wanna go fast. I've been toying with a Swift build myself, but have been wondering if the rim on the cartridge caused any feed problems.....

I have a 22-250 AI, but with a 8" twist for 69-75 bullets, I have shot 53 grain Barnes triple shock solid bronze bullets at 3900+fps with it, but I shoot those at 3600fps in a .224 Weatherby for the local blactails. So I think the 22-250AI is neck and neck with a swift as the case capacity is about identical.
I am interested in building a .220 Weatherby Rocket(an improved Swift) with a 1-14" twist to shoot 40 grain bullets at 4500fps, the rocket holds 5 more grains of water than the Ackley 22-250!:)

another option

Have you considered a 22-243 Midleston? If you are going to go with a handload proposition this is the way to go. I had a Savage chambered for the Midleston and in a time of insanity traded it, and when I came to my senses I bought a Ruger exactly like yours to have it re-chambered.
