I bought this gun a year or so ago and after a few months of shooting it almost everyday, the rear sight started moving to the left. I figured there was something wrong with the sight so I ordered a new one from Ruger. well now the new one has started to do the same thing.
I'm wondering if the sights Ruger makes are junk or if the dovetail is cut too big.
Has this happened to anyone else?

I just took mine out and with a fairly large amount of finger pressure I can move it just a bit. I'm not going to take it all the way out to see how it is fitted but it seems to be just an interference fit.

I've shot mine quite a bit and never had that problem and you've contacted Ruger already, did they make any recommendations as to fitting it or somehow tightening it up?

Mayby send it in to Ruger or see if they have oversize sights available?

You might try a little Loc-Tite in the dovetail to keep it in place. Either that or send it back to Ruger. If my experience with them is any indication, they will fix it for you for free.

To easy ways to fix this . Use a pointed set or punch and place at the joint between the reciever and the site and strike the set. This will fix the movement. OR slide the site to the right and then make several indents in the reciever under the site where the reciever was milled out. If the set is hit sharply it will leave a high ring around the punch mark and this will hold the site in place. Tap the site back to center and ajust as needed.

"Wicking" grade Loc-Tite 290 has always cured this issue for me, I usually heat the sight and receiver with a heat gun to expand it a bit and then put a drop on each side of the dovetail. Easy to heat again (but much hotter) if you need to readjust someday.

Wow... alright then, this thread pretty much killed my desire to get a 22/45. Loose sights? I don't have time for that tomfoolery. I'll just go ahead to the next thing on my list.

Just to be clear, have you tightened the set screw on the rear sight? It sounds like the set screw wiggled loose on the original sight and some lock tite on that screw would have solved the problem. Did you tighten the set screw when you installed the new sight?

This isn't a common problem. All makes have problems from time to time. Get what you want but I've had no problems with any of the Rugers that I've owned over the years.

I bought a MKIII 22/45 after reading many posts, good and bad about them.

Mine has been no problem. A little tough to dismantle first time but nothing a human being with half a brain could not deal with. (yes, I have just about half a brain)

Twice people have told me they were going to sell theirs and both times I offered to purchase.
In each case they wanted just a little more than what I could get a new one for.

Leads me to believe that they really did not want to sell them in the first place.....

Back on topic......I have not touched our sight since day one.
Still tight and right on the money.

My sights are adjustable. It is not my preference, but since a guy offered to sell it to me, mint condition, for $200 I bought it. I prefer to have fixed sights, sighted in properly by the factory. Now that it's sighted in it is super accurate. I haven't noticed any unusual movement. Although, if I don't stop dropping it on my table after hammering it off the frame I may develop a sight alignment problem.

Just to be clear. This is the second 22/45 I,ve owned. The other one was a stainless MKll. The sights were fine but I couldn't fire a whole 10 round magazine without extraction or ejection issues no matter what brand of ammo I was firing.
I traded that one. this one fires great. Its just a sight issue.
Does the adjustable sight have a set screw?

The Achilles heel of the Ruger Mark series pistols is the extractor. These are known for rounding off or chipping the hook off the exrtractor.

It is an easy fix though with a new extractor and it's spring which are available from Ruger as well as various other vendors.

Volquartensen makes a very nice one out of hardened tool steel, that is considered to be the best fix for the MKs extractor issues.

Well, I learned a little bit from this post. I got my manual out and studied the parts diagram and examined my rear sight. Yes, there is a "Rear Sight Base Screw" that looks very similiar to the windage adjustment screw but it located on the top, left side of the sight itself. Mine was snug but I was able to turn it just a slight amount to set it tighter.

I didn't reliaze the OP was refering to the fixed sight version.

Now I'll take it out and verify zero but won't use the loc-tite, I don't think I should have the listed problem with the set up I have.

Thanks for the education and my Mk III has been a tack-driver from day one so I never had a need to adjust the rear sights.
