22 Ammunition cost

im glad i only use federal bulk packs, the rem is garbage. and thats also why i buy 2 or 3 packs every time i go to walmart no matter if im just wasiting time for whatever.

i usualy shoot around 400rounds every weekend if im by my self in .22LR alone, if someone comes with it usually goes to about 1k simply because we break out the semi-autos and blast at some soda cans.

My guns run better with the remington, but honestly at this point I have to switch to federal just for cost. thankfully I have about 5k of remington socked away to draw off of for my fun leagues at the club.

IMHO, the best deal in .22LR right now is Federal 510 (blue box) at Wal-Mart for $1.28 a box, $12.80 a brick. OK, in the past two years it has gone from $.97 to $1.07 to what it is now, but at Gander Mountain the same ammo is almost double that price.

I shoot a lot of .22 LR in my Ruger Mk 2 Target pistol and .22 conversions for my 1911 and CZ-75 pistols, and they are each different in ammo. It doesn't make any real difference in my .22 bolt action rifles (I don't have any semi-autos).

The Ruger, which I use primarily for 100-yd shooting with a 2-power scope from sandbags, functions best with 40-gr ammo, either std or hi-velocity. The Federal hollow-point HV ammo gives me 3-1/2" groups at 100-yd (same as the 40-gr), but occasional (say, one in ten) stovepipe jams (failure to eject cleanly, old case caught behind the feeding cartridge). The Remingtons are almost as accurate, but I get a 1" flyer about every 8th round...same stovepipe jam frequency. I favor the Federal ammo for this pistol.

The CZ, with CZ .22 Kadet conversion, is fine with any ammo...a real dream to shoot. I use that for combat-style shooting at 25-yd on an 8" bull. It started out as a .40, but it's so much fun to shoot as a .22 that I've never converted back.:D

The 1911, with the cheaper Marvel conversion, has 100% failure to eject with hollow points. But with 40-gr Remington Thunderbolts, it's 100% reliable. I use that primarily for combat-style practice at 25 yd. It's not as accurate as the CZ (though the Marvel has a longer barrel and sight spacing), but provides practice with the 1911...

I haven't tested CCI, as I have large stocks on hand of the cheaper Federal and Remington. Winchester ammo works well, but there's not much of it around here...was my preferred 100-yd ammo, until I ran out of it....

Locally, the best prices are at Wal-Mart (I buy bricks).

RyanM is essentially correct. That is indeed the commodity pricing for said materials. Smaller quantities will cost considerably more. As volume of materials increases, it approaches the commodity price. Transportation of large quantities will be expensive, but will be spread over a much larger load.

For a lot of modern mass produced products, materials are the largest single contributor to cost. Very heavily engineered, high precision, semi-custom work has a large overhead component for the office workforce. Ammunition, especially .22LR is mostly materials. The engineering was done more than 100 years ago. THe automation, machines, etc. has been in place for years. Most .22LR is never touched by human hands until you take it from the box to load in your gun. Very, very low labor component.

Back in the early 1970's our neighborhood Circle K store would sell us kids a box of 22lr for 35 cents and shorts were 25 cents. I can't imagine what buying in bulk was, must have been really cheap then. 35cents seemed like alot of money then. The shorts didn't make much noise so I didn't like them.

prices going up

Thats what happens when a gas man (Bush) is voted into office. Only more to come. Hope everyone learned their lesson.

I shoot nothing but CCI Standard Velocity, so I live with the price or don't shoot my High Standard. It's highly accurate and more importantly reliable. I tried Aguila Standard Velocity for a while, but it was unreliable in my gun. It seems the cases are bigger in diameter than the CCI ones. I don't need failures to extract during a bullseye match.

Cabelas has the Federal Champion value pack on sale for $13 right now. It's an in-store deal only however.

Dumbest statement ever...

seriously, get out and read, learn economic theory and really, stop reading bumper stickers.

I still want to know why a box of 25 20 gauge cheap shot is 6 dollars and a box of 50 HMR is 13
It is pretty funny that I can shoot my 12g for just about the same price per shot as my 17HMR.

Winchester Xpert22, hollow point were $12.87 plus tax for 500 at Walmart. Federal were about 85 cents less.

wow...!!!

and a brick cost you 16$ ???

here, the best you can get, is soomthing like 40$ for the same amount of 22lr... (500 rounds)-

I wonder why such a huge difference.

Shung, I believe what you are seeing are large taxes placed on the ammunition resulting in the outrageous prices. The socialist leaning European countries believe that they can tax their way to prosperity, much in line with the philosophy of one of our own Presidential candidates.

I just bought three boxes of Winchester Xpert for $12.something.

The lady behind the counter was trying to get me to buy a box(10 packs) because she just got an ammo shipment and couldn't fill the shelves with it all.
