There is a thread going on in competition about the best 22 ammo, which got me to wondering about my pistol choices.
I have a Ruger 22/45 which will eat anything, but get good accuracy from wolf pistol. and,
Bersa thunder 22 that I love which works well with Aquila High velocity.
I have not tried a lot of others. What do you use?

I have tried virtually every 22 ammo out there.

For accuracy, Wolf MT, Eley Sport, and CCI SV are all good. CCI Pistol Match is even slightly better. The high-end Eley offerings like Pistol Match and Tenex are overkill and sometimes won't even cycle the gun.

For plinking, Federal Automatch is great.

I've been testing/shooting a lot of Aguila .22lr ammo lately and all of the match/target line will shoot within less than 1/4" for 10 shots consistently at 25 yards in all my .22s.

I have a Ruger MKII 5.5" bbl with a 2X7 scope on it and I really love showing off at the range with it. The Match Pistol works best in it with Target a close second.

I had a friend once tell me that Remington and other bulk ammo shot just fine in his .22s. After benching a couple of his guns and seeing 2"-3" groups at 25 yards I asked him what he meant by "just fine".

He said it went bang every time he pulled the trigger. I then proceeded to show him what decent ammo would do and made a believer out of him.

For accuracy or reliability?

I should have bee more specific.
Accuracy for the 22/45 (hence the wolf match pistol)
reliabilty for the Bersa t-22 ( the manual actually says use high velocity)

I have found that CCI std velocity target works very well in my Mark III. Way less inconsistancy.

I have found in MY guns (10/22, MKII, Single-Six) that I get the best 'cycle the action' with ammo like Stingers, Velocitors, etc. Better accuracy with the Standard Velocity stuff, like the CCI 'Green Tag'

My .22 pistol and rifle both like cartridges from Eley and from Dynamit Nobel.

Be ready to spend some $$$ as these are NOT CHEAP!

It totally depends on the gun. My new Ruger SR22 shoots best with bulk pack Federal. Well, it shoots a little better with RWS Target, but that stuff is expensive. RWS turns my old Remington M512X bolt gun into a target rifle. Eley match works best in other of my guns.

In the SR22, the Federal shoots 2" at 25 yards. RWS shoots 1.5" at 25 yards. It's a plinker, I shoot Federal in it. :D My Rossi 511 revolver shoots 2" with Federal, 1" with Federal Auto Match. The Auto Match is pretty affordable, keep a box for the Rossi for plinking and WHATEVER as 1" is as good as I can shoot with iron sights from the bench at 25 yards.

My scoped Mk2 shoots better with Federal bulk than with Auto Match. I've not tried any of the high zoot match ammo in it. I mean, it's a hunting pistol with a 2x optic on it and it shoots 1" at 50 yards from the bench, plenty accurate enough to head shoot a squirrel.

If I shot serious competition with a .22, I'd work with Eley and RWS and hang the price of the stuff. But, I'm a hunter/plinker and the stuff is just too expensive for my blood for those uses. I ain't that mad at those tin cans. :D

CCI mini mag and Stinger (except in my match barrel Contender which won't chamber it as the case is too long) and others like Winchester and Remington never seem to work as well as the bulk Federal. Oh, CCI is always the best for ignition in guns that give occasional misfires, but accuracy, hell, the bulk works as well or better. This new Federal Auto Match hasn't really impressed me in ANY of my dozen or so .22s except in the Rossi.

One exception, Stinger, usually pathetic for accuracy, works BEST in a cheap little Phoenix Arms POS I have. The maker warns not to use it in the gun, but i've fired some in it and in the past have carried it afield fishing just to have for a kit gun as the gun is quite accurate, though a cheap zinc wonder, I'll admit.

I have several Ruger MK's. They all shoot nice groups and function reliably with Federal 36 gr copper plated hp. They red dotted 10 inch will shoot 10 shot silver dollar sized groups at 50 yards.

I save they Wolf and other higher priced stuff for my better rifles.

My Ruger MKII (5.5 bull) likes CCI mini-mags and works great and is accurate with Federal Bulk 36gr HP's. I just ordered some Aguila SSS (60gr) to see if my gun will shoot them OK.

I know the Ruger has a 1:16 twist rifling but what the heck I'll see if the 60 grainers will stablize and I didn't break the bank.

I recently acquired a GSG 1911-22. The first few tests I've done with it indicate that it shoots better groups and closer to point of aim the faster the round. So I'll probably shoot CCI Stingers in it. My Hi Standard pistols need standard velocity because of the frame cracking issue they are prone to. The Ruger single six will shoot just about anything, but I haven't found it to be very accurate. The CZ Kadet will shoot anything and is accurate with just about anything.

One note: I don't shoot anything with the name Remington on it.

Every 22 is different even if they came down the line right behind each other. You just have to try lots of ammo and see which yours likes best. Wolf MT which is the same thing as SK shoots good in anything but match ammo is expensive. As for the cheap stuff just try them all and see. Personally I have found that federal american eagle is the best all around cheap ammo for accuracy in my guns. You can get a rim thickness gauge and use it on the really cheap bulk ammo and it will amaze you at the wide differences you will find in one box but you can just sit and check them and separate them into groups and even get pretty accurate ammo out of that. I have shot 1/4 inch 5 shot groups with federal bulk 550 form wally world at 25 yards using this method.

I haven't tried a lot of different ammo but my 22/45 likes CCI SV out of everything I have tried. Funny that the worst consistency has been from Blazer. The gun does cycle everything I've fed it so far though. I have been the recipient of several boxes of ammo that did not work well in other people's guns at the range but the 22/45 likes it just fine.

I have several .22's and the lead nose blazer is the only thing ALL of them will cycle, and it is as accurate as I am. On a bench I would use CCI mini mag or speer.

CCI Mini-Mags work best in my Benelli M95E Atlanta. Some of the low-power subsonic stuff doesn't properly cycle the action. Which is odd given the type of gun.

Anyone used Federal Automatch in a "recent" 10/22?

My accuracy sucks...granted it's with Federal bulk 550 round promo packs, but the barrel IS RIFLED, isn't it?

Actually, that's all I've ever put through it...foolish me...but it's a .22.

Is the good stuff REALLY better?

I'm seeing 6 MOA (with scope) a lot of the time....3 to 4 MOA about 60% of the time. (Think 10 round groups, including flyers.)

Yeah, .22LR is cheap but I gotta go out of my way (literally) to find non-bulk-pack rounds...

Really?

I've had really bad luck with Eley Sport, but some love it.

I think the general consensus is .22LR is very finicky on a per gun basis. Closest I've seen to universal is CCI SV.

I have some SK+ (Same as Wolf Target) that I will be trying soon, would love to try Lapua CenterX as an experiment but I'm not paying for that all the time.

IMO, when you get good enough to argue millimeters then look at the ammo, until then use whats cycles consistently.

Another vote for the CCI Mini-Mags.

I've never had a .22 that didn't work great with them. Even Jam-o-matics with bulk stuff like the P22 and Jennings worked fine with Mini-Mags.

If it won't work with Mini-Mags it won't work with anything.
