Hello all.

im looking to buy a .22lr autoloading pistol sometime in the near future. I will be using it mostly for practice and maybee for some small game hunting. Im looking at either the Sig Mosquito or the Walther P22.

i have heard some bad reports from bolth of these guns, but others seem to love them. I would appreciate it if anyone experienced with either of these weapons could give me their opinion.

Secondly, i would like to get a silencer for it eventualy. Are silencers and the accutroments neeed for such easyer to find for one or the other?

Thank you!

They are both great guns

I have both and have not had problems with either, although I have had the Walther a year and the Sig only a week.

The Walther is cheaper and feels more like a toy, it is smaller but these things also make it more fun. You can get rounds off a little quicker with the Walther. Its double action is shorter and lighter. The sights aren't as good as the Sig, but I shoot just as well with it. Walther makes a laser, scope mount, and red dot scope for this gun. You can buy a longer barrel for it as well, and the barrel is easy to replace. It also comes with a threaded barrel (except in CA) so it is ready to go for a suppressor. There is a plastic holster available. This gun will go 500 rounds without a cleaning or malfunction using CCI minmag ammo. The P22 costs about $270 new.

The Sig is bigger and more solid, it feels like a 'real' gun, and has a frame mounted decocker. It has a long and heavier DA pull, and the SA has a lot of takeup then a crisp light click at the end. The sights are better. You can get one with a threaded barrel, but I have not seen one in a store. Sig also makes a target package with a red dot and mount. It's rail will accommodate standard pistol lights/lasers. There is also a plastic holster available. The gun only comes with one Mag, but 2 recoil springs for different types of ammo. This gun went its first 150 rounds without a malfunction, it then had a few rounds that needed a second strike to fire. When I cleaned it I found it had gotten much dirtier than the Walther and a quick wipe down at the range most likely would have alleviated the issue. The Sig costs about $375 new.

I have had both pistols. In that catagory of a 22lr pistol I now have a Firestorm 22lr, beats both the p22 and Mosquito hands down

Buy a good Ruger MK II or III you will think you shooting a rifle . The Ruger will still be shooting when those toys are in the junk pile. If my Ruger shot group like those I sent to factory and say FIX it. Get a Ruger about same money
Other good 22 is the Browning

If you decide on buying the Walther P22, check the barrel code on the chamber block (at the ejection port). You want a letter code of AG or later. AG means 2006 production date, AH 2007, etc.. The 2006 model incorporated several important upgrades for reliability.

The P22 takes no modifications to attach an appropriate supressor. Make sure you get the appropriate paperwork (stamp tax) when you get your supressor.

Tactical Innovations has some great accessories for the P22. The +3 mag follower is actually a +2 follower (my experience).

I've had nearly all the 22 auto loaders made and the best two yet has been the Kimber and the Colt Ace. The Ace functions flawlessy with any of the cheap ammo and the good ammo but the Kimber has to have the good stuff. Accuracy is awesome on both guns. I know they are pricey but you'll never lose money on them.

Sold my P22. He loves it. Very picky about ammo. I still have my Trailside and I love it. Awesome pistol.

True the Ruger is more accurate, but sooooo BORING, what a snore, same deal with those other pistols like browning buckmark, or S&W 22a etc. Yes they are super accurate, and super boring, they are as much fun as a BB gun, they don't resemble real guns at all. Based on the fact that you were thinking about the Walther or Sig I assumed you wanted something with a 'tactical' look and feel. The Sig or Walther fit the bill. If you want to stand around all day getting more and more bored get the Ruger.

Flame away!!!!!!!!

Agreed.

With all due respect to your opinion, I don't see what you could find "boring" about a pistol so tough using the word "tank" as a descriptor is now all but trite as well as being more accurate than probably 90% of all but the most hard-core, dedicated Bullseye shooters amongst us.

Unless, of course, you refer to the ragged, one-hole groups I can "bore" in my intended target as I digest brick after brick after brick of .22 ammo with nary a hitch. That's the kind of "boring" that I, personally, tend to seek out in a pistol ... of any caliber.

No flame retardant required... Just my proverbial two-cent's.

Baphomet,
Don't take me too seriously, it's just that there is a difference between a pistol that comes with a threaded barrel, a rail and a moving slide and one that just functions well.

A Honda Civic is reliable and gets great mileage, but I like a V8 Pickup Truck (even if the rearend had to be replaced at 45k and had a steering column shaft failure at 26k and costs $65 to fill up).

YMMV I suppose.

@ MartinBrody:

Ahhh... I think we may be speaking the same language after all.

Check it...

Yes? Okay, so maybe it has a bolt instead of a slide but hey, how many other (semi-auto) pistols can boast they have a bolt??? A BOLT!!!!!

You know, if you keep saying "bolt" over and over and over, it starts to sound really funny...

Yes, Iv looked at the Ruger. Theya re nice, but im looking for something that i can throw in my backpack for camping and such. The Ruger isnt that small.

I am well aware of the concesions needed to obtaine a silencer.

How much more expensive would it be to get a threaded barrel for the Ruger MK series?

i prefer old school rugers. its funny, for years i thought i had a ruger mark1 but it turned out its a ruger standard. go figure. i can say that i hate the mark3 and dont really like the mark2 much. i like the original. no bs safety junk. built solid and works.

ill agree, the ruger is boring. close to no failures, tight groups, comfortable, feeds subsonics flawlessly. jeeze, how boring. maybe i need to remove my sights to make things exiting again.

ok, sarcasm aside, im not familiar with the p22 or the other one enough to recomend either. but what i can say is that ive seen barely used rugers in gun shops for 150 bucks. i paid 170 somthing out the door for mine years ago and i shoot it more than anything else i own. im considering getting another.

mr.trooper

threaded barrels are about 75 bucks shipped for the rugers. ive seen threaded adapters that slip onto bullbarrels for much cheaper tho.

One of the few guns I will never get rid of is my S&W 2213.

It is a fine pistol that is reliable, accurate and eats everything.

I don't know why they stopped making this one.

Nothing boring about having the best accuracy and the best reliability and a great history in one fine peace of machinery.

If you're looking for a .22 to carry to the range in a case, and fire only at a formal firing line, get a Browning or Ruger.

If you're looking for an all arond .22, for the field and trail get the SIG or Walther.

The SIG and Walther are DA, so you can carry them safely in a holster with a round chambered. The Ruger and Browning are SA, so cannot be safely carried with a round chambered.

Here are my thoughts.

A .22 is generally not a self defense weapon and this thread is not directed to use of the pistol for self defense. We are talking about plinking and target shooting, maybe hunting small game

To me, accuracy and reliablity are the most important factors. Particularlty for target work and hunting. Why else would you want to pull the trigger but for to hit what you are aiming at? If someone wants a loud noise, light a fire cracker, if you want to look like a real gun (what ever that is?), buy one of those bb or plastic ball shooters things (I don't remember the name). The ruger looks a lot like a Luger, which is pretty 'real'. The ruger has been around for about 50 years. The P22 and Misq. and Sig all look like current polymer designs, so they all look real to me.

Plus for small game, you need accuracy. Anyway to each his own, but I think accuracy and reliabity are the most important. I don't understand buying something that 'looks' a certain way, but lacks accuracy/reliabilty. If it not accuracy, you might lose interest over time as your skill improve beyond the accuracy of the pistol.

I don't know which pistol is the best so that is up to you. :)

The military tunnel rats used the .22LR, and assassin have used .22LR's because they can kill a man without making much noise.

It has been said that every animal on the north American continent has been taken with a .22.

I know that as a kid growing up in the mountains, all the venison I ever eat was taken with a .22LR.

True I would opt for something bigger if my life depended on it but don't discount the fact that a .22LR can kill a man dead, whether he is dead from a .22 or dead from a 460 Weatherby Mag makes no differance, he's as dead as it gets.
