I read somewhere that there was a barrel insert that would convert a shotgun to a 22. Is this true, I've tried to find more info but no luck. If it is true, has anyone tried this.

Interesting, for sure..... but kind of seems like a solution looking for a problem to solve to me. Now if it was an insert that ran the full length of the barrel, that might be cool and solve some of the accuracy issues - but would likely cost as much or more than a new .22 rifle.

I'll tell you what it probably WOULD be good for: making it extremely quiet. That huge shotgun bore basically becomes an expansion chamber for the gasses. So it might be good for varmint control where noise is an issue. Stick the barrel up to a snake and blast it, etc.

There are longer, rifled barrel inserts often offered for use in single barrel and double barrel shotguns. I saw one listed 18" long, .45-70, that essentially was intended to become a semi-permanent assembly in one barrel of a double barrel gun.

The shell sized adapters for use in repeaters suffer from lack of accuracy: most I have seen off and on at gunshows over the years are smooth bore and are intended for use with .22 shotshells which are not cheap. They might give better accuracy with 29gr bullets like .22 Short or the CB short and CB long cartridges.
