but with match ammo a 22 is more expensive to shoot that a large C/F rifle and +/-$1 per shot where a reloaded 308 or 223 might cost 50-60c.

Seriously? You spend $1.00 per round for 22LR. I can find match grade 22 ammo all day long online with most of it maybe 25 cents a round. Where are you buying ammo from?

I started off with a 308 thinking that I was "big" enough to bypass the 22. Boy was I wrong! While I wasn't an awful shot with the 308, i wasn't awesome either and it was eating my wallet. Enter the 22LR: I bought a CZ "Trainer" rifle in 22LR and started shooting that. What I found was that the more I shot the 22, the more I enjoyed it and the better I got with the 308. It didn't happen over night. I've had the 22 for 3 years and I am still learning from it and having fun with it. Overall, It might be my favorite rifle and by far my favorite 22. It is a godsend when trying to teach new shooters as well. If I had it to do over again, there is no doubt in my mind that I would start with a 22 and work my way up.
