Hey all.
I've been in the market for a bolt-action rifle to take to the range to break up the pistol practice. I'll likely get it in a shorter scout style. I don't currently hunt but I'd like something bigger and more consistent than a 22. Right now I'm leaning towards a 223 or maybe a 243. I only have experience with the larger rounds and the 22. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Well, if your going to buy one just to break up pistol practice, I would suggest a .223 over the .243 because of cost and barrel life. A 1-7" twist .223 can and will perform and longish ranges. Another option would be a .308, its a bit more costly than the .223, but has greater energy downrange if you ever want to go hunting.

Many will suggest a sexy little 6.5mm wonder caliber, but quite frankly, I see no huge differnces in a .308 and 6.5 beside cost and barrel life for your stated purpose.

And if you go with the .223, you might can have the camber reamed out a bit so you can shoot surplus 5.56x45mm for messing around. Either way, make sure you love your rifle!

If you get a 1/7 .223, it very likely already has a 5.56 NATO chamber.

Most all dedicated .223 Rem rifles have a slower twist barrel to better handle lighter varmint bullets.

I'm one of those folks that love those little 6.5s (most notably the .260Rem. & 6.5mmCreedmoor); IMO there is simply no better caliber for long range shooting at up to 1200yds or so. That said, the .223Rem. is an excellent choice for the range that most folks actually shoot (sub-750yds.), particularly if you don't handload. Just make sure that you have the proper twist (at least a 1:8) for stabilizing heavy projectiles.
