What is your Favorite 22 hornet load?

I use 35 grain v-max, 11.6 grains of h110 and federal small rifle primers. At 100 yards I get 3 shot groups in 5/8" and 5 shot groups about 7/8".. I have heard that small pistol primers work better but have not gotten around to test it.

Jared,

Small pistol primers didn't make any difference in my jacketed bullet Hornet loads, I've shot some cast gas checked bullets with small pistol primers and they grouped better.

Remington 6 1/2's and CCI small rifle benchrest have given me my best groups with the Hornet.

I shoot Hodgdons Lil' Gun 12.5 grs behind 40 Gr V-max and the CCI Benchrest primers clocked at 2700 fps 24" barrel Savage, had a 7/8" 20 shot @ 100 yd. group with the 40's so I stay with them.

With the same load, only the 35 gr Vmax , the Barnes 36 gr Varmint Grenade or Berger 36 gr HP's, I get 2900 fps, and just a little bigger groups.

You need to borrow some Lil'Gun and try it out, it works wonders in some guns!

The latest Speer manual uses small pistol primers with the 22 Hornet. They said the results were better with small pistol primers.

I use W296 and AA1680 in my 22 Hornet loads. My Contender Carbine likes the Speer 40 grain spire point.

I have tried lil gun with the 35 grain. maybe I need to try it with 40 grain. Does any one use anything besides the v-max?

I pulled out the lil gun from my cabinet this morning loaded some bullets 12.4 grains and 12.2 grains with 45 grain hornady. It is amazing what 2 grains of powder will do. I only shot 50 yards today but 12.2 grain gave me a three inch group. 12.4 about 1/2 inch, 5 shots. would have been smaller but got 1 flyer. I will load more and take it out to 100 yards. looks promising thanks for the advice.

I settled on 13.0gr of Lil'Gun and the 35gr V-Max with a CCI small pistol primer. I shot an honest to god .6" group at 200yds with my Savage model 40. That is the best group I have ever shot with any rifle. I had much smaller groups using the SP primers, but Remington SR primers worked OK too.

11.5 grs. of either H4227 or IMR's and the now discontinued Nosler 45 gr RN Solid Base. I've taken nearly as many bunnys with it as with 22LR's. It always shot well, usually around MOA, out of my old Savage 23D or H&R Handi-rifle. I don't have enough left to try many in the Savage 40. The Sierra 40 and 45 gr Hornet bullets always shoots well too. I like RN for edible game and polymer tips for varmints.

re: jaredoutdoors....

er,''' uh,,,, I don't think that you meant 12.0gr of TiteGroup in a Hornet! That would send you and what's left of your rifle to the emergency room......
Be more careful in what you post. I believe you meant Hodgdon's Lil'Gun......

Yep. Fortunately it is so off not many would take it seriously, but still, someone might.

For me, in the Hornet, it's the 40gr Sierra HP "Varminter" at 1.780" over 12.5gr of Hod'Lil gun. Gets right at 3,000fps and is near 1moa accurate.

I've even taken a number of deer with this load. (does at under 100yds, head/neck shots....).

Also, I like 10.0gr of H110 under most any decent 45gr Soft Point, particularily the 45gr Sierra and 45gr Hornady "Hornet" bullets.

10.8gr of #1680 under a Hornady 50gr SX is good for 2,550fps and near 1-hole accuracy from my otherwise dissapointing Ruger M77/22 KBZ.

Sorry,
You are right it is Lil Gun, Tite Group was the last powder I was using for something else. Thank you for catching it.

H110 gives me sub 1 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards in my Kimber. I load 11 grains with a 45 grain bullet. I mostly use WW small rifle primers and have so far failed to see a difference between them and pistol primers. I do use small pistol primers for powders like Unique when loading reduced power loads. I no longer hunt with centerfire guns but did kill three deer with this rifle many years ago.

Hi maferick,

Welcome to the forum !

I picked this load from Reloaders Nest SO USE WITH CAUTION !

Powder Alliant Bullseye 3.0 grains
Bullet 30 gr.Sierra HP
Winchester brass
Winchester small rifle prmer
COL 1.47"
Velocity 2140 FPS
22" barrel Handi Rifle
3 shot group size @ 100 yds.

Couldn't find anything with 800X.
I'm interested in trying the Bullseye load with my Savage Model 40 Varmint Hunter .

So far the 45 grain V-MAX over Lil Gun works best for my singleshot rifle. I've been trying to duplicate some excellent handloads I bought from a gunshow vendor some years ago - Same brass, same bullet, I believe strongly he used Lil Gun - no idea what primer. I'm getting close.
Just ordered some 35 grain V-MAX from Midways - I keep reading of guys doing very well with a lighter bullet. Worth a try.
I am getting under an inch at an honest 100 yards. The old gunshow loads gave me 5/8"groups.

Thanks for the replys. I'm planning on getting a new ruger in 22 hornet soon .Interested in seeing how it will do on groundhogs this summer, also have become interested in trying coyote hunting, which I have never done.thanks again
