Hello friends. I have been shooting for the last past eight years, but exclusively blackpowder. I recently bought a Marlin 795 for my 12-year old son to shoot.

As you all know, it's darn hard to find .22 LR ammo these days.

Can anyone tell me if ".22 LR Eley Tenex EPS Lead Flat Nose 40 Grain" bullets would work well in this rifle?

I have some CCI mags on order, but the Eley is a lot cheaper. Would appreciate any insight on whether or not to both with the Eley and if the rounds will cycle in the Marlin 795.

Thanks.

They should work fine, of course each rimfire can be different. Eley Tenex is some of the best target ammo there is, and if it is cheaper than Mini-Mags you are either getting a very good deal on the Eley or paying way too much for the CCI.

I never seemed to have much success from an accuracy standpoint with Eley Tenex. For the majority of my rimfires Wolf Match Target and CCI MiniMags consistently give me the best results in terms of outstanding accuracy and reliability. For general usage, like plinking and informal target practice, Federal Auto Match is another great performer in my Ruger Mk.II and 10/22 rifle.

The eley is usually more expensive. Eley and wolf match is some of the best on the market. I have problems with the cci mini mags in some of my gins.

Cheaper than CCI mini mag? WOW, the market is REALLY screwed up!

I've never tried the tenex, but Eley Match is fabulous in my 10/22, shaving groups nearly in half at 50 yards from what mini mag shoots (1.5" for mini mag) It functions flawlessly and is great for squirrel hunting, though at 20 bucks a box of 50, I ain't shootin' tin cans with it.

As noted, Eley is top drawer stuff. The only issue might be the flat nose feeding properly. But the 795 is known to feed practically anything. Try it.

While I suppose this is possible in the silliness of late, you didnt accidentally order .22WMR maxi-mags instead of .22lr mini-mags, did you?

Tenex cheaper than Mini Mags? Something is wrong there. Tenex is $19.50 per 50 box at Champions Choice. Either your seller has his Tenex priced wrong or his Mini Mags marked up way high.

Even maxi mags never cost me the price of Tenex, $9.95 a box of fifty for the Maxi Mags at Academy before the stupidity hit the fan. That's half the price of Tenex. I was even getting Hornady PD .22 mag for 15.95 for my little Black Widow. I'm hording that stuff, now. Fortunately, I had a little stash before it disappeared from the market. The Eley I've bought is available only because the local rednecks (other than me) won't spend that much for .22LR. :D

Tenex is top of the line Eley ammo, it's the go to ammo for many world class shooters.

It should work fine in a Marlin 795 if you don't mind paying for it.

Even in today's world of extreme prices for .22lr, mini mags seem to bring $50-$70 per 500 while tenex is typically $200 per 500 rounds. Are you sure you are looking at equal quantities of both minimags and tenex? If so, can you point me to where the tenex is cheaper? I can always use some tenex at bargain prices.

If you have a good target rifle and Eley Tenex or Match you should be able to hit aspirin every round at 50 yards and Alka Seltzer tab every round at 100. In the 70s and you could get to England to factory with your rifle they would match ammo to your rifle is you bought 6000 rounds and quaranteed 1/2" or less at 100.

But alas those days are gone. I have about 15K of MKIII, Tenex, Match, Rem Match and Win Gold left stored away in ammo cans. Perhaps I will shoot smallbore again if I am able.

With wreck from three weeks ago I suspect my competition shooting days are over.

Eley Tenex is very good, but I suspect it is wasted in that Marlin. You will get better cost to benefit ratio if you switch to Eley Club or even Eley Sport.
Another option is RWS Target Rifle.
We are not feeling the ammo pinch as badly here in the UK, however we pay a lot for ammo all the time. I paid £74 for 1000 rounds of Eley sport recently.
CCI Mini mag is cheaper but I can't get it at the moment.

Wasted in the Marlin? Perhaps, but it totally depends on use. Good, accurate ammo is desirable for shooting squirrel heads at 50 yards and if the ammo makes the gun a minute of squirrel head rifle, hey, why not? I use it for that in my Ruger 10/22, bone stock except for the stock, not exactly an Anschutz. Not for plinking, of course. I'll burn up cheap ammo on my swinging targets, thanks.

What I mean is, he'll get that minute of squirrel head with the Eley Sport and the RWS Target Rifle.
Even on my R55 benchmark it is hard to justify buying Tenex and I know for a fact I can get slightly tighter groups with it (a few millimetres tops), compared to Eley Sport.

.22 Ammo

A lot can change over the years, I know this is old thread but....
The "Olympic Grade" Eley tenex was the best I tried so far, got a 1 MOA 5-shot group at 100 yards with my MK II pistol years ago. I haven't tried the Wolf or the Lapua but maybe one day I might get around to it.

As others have noted, Tenex is usually about the most expensive .22 ammo there is. Should be way more expensive than anything CCI makes. A few times a year I'll splurge and get a few boxes to see what my .22 target rifles can really do on a dead calm day, any wind and I'd probably be wasting my money. Some rifles shoot Tenex the best, others like Lapua Midas, and some like Center X, and some actually rather the lesser variations of Eley. I would not buy it to shoot in anything other than a target rifle, though. I use the Eley Subsonic HPs to hunt with.
