I have a ruger 10/22,a marlin .22,and a marlin 17hmr.Any reason to have a .22 magnum other than I want it??It is a nice bolt action marlin for $200.I will pick up a .22 hornet one day but this little magnum is whispering to me.
Bulets are cheap enough and mine are fun to shoot. There,I have almost convinced myself:D

Do you hunt small game or predators? Better distance and killing power with the 22mag. Theres your reason!

Ammo is a little cheaper than .17 and almost as fast,Microgroove barrels as you know, are killer.

Is it new?
What type of stock?
All in all I think you'll be bummed if you pass on it.Shure love my .22 wsm a bolt.

It is used in VGC.It has the grey stock with lighter shades mixed in.Same as my .17.Nice barrell.$200 fair??

no, the hmr will do everything a 22 mag will do; let me expand on that a bit. A 22 mag, has more energy out to about 80 yds, after that , the 17 hmr takes over in every way; better trajectory, better wind bucking, better energy, more accurate. a 17 hmr, is faster at 100 yds, than a 22 mag is at the muzzle.
plus 22 mag is known for NOT being made to any real accuracy standards. If you find a 22 mag ammo/ rifle combo that is accurate, you keep it.
If you want something with a real kick to it, get a 5mm mag rimfire rifle, It has the speed and trajectory of a 17 hmr, but with a 30, 32 or 35 grain bullet, plus it has better b.c., and even better wind bucking ability. It is a true, 200 yd, varmint killer, that is a rimfire. Neither the 17 or the 22 mag is.

Only one of the best....no, scratch that....THE best rimfire round made!

Then WHY is it in the grave? I hear of a resurrection in the near distant future, but only opine in magazines....

I think we should start 'the national federated organization for the implementation and installation of the 5mm' movement!

...somebody...PLEASE, bring back the 5mm in various tack-driving bolt, semi and whatever action firearms.....PLEASE!!

Hey, Centurion is loading ammo...we need a rifle to shoot it out of!

For those who weren't around when the 5mm was the rage...sorry, you missed one heck of a cartridge!

Ranger...we HAVE to do something.....quick!

Whoever said the .22WMR isn't accurate? I have a Savage 65M in .22mag. I use 40gr. Maxi-mags by CCI exclusively. I have shot crows at 125 paces(FULL paces I'm 6'1") with only about 2" drop from POA to POI. I also killed 3 squirrels from the same tree at 125 paces with 4 shots fired.( on another post I erroneously gave my Ruger 10/22 credit for this but it was the Savage). I don't have a .17hmr so I don't know how it compares but I do know that the .22wmr is extremely accurate (at least mine is) with-in it's range.

Well...comparative between the 17HMR and the lowly 22LR, the 22MAG for the most part is not as accurate as the two aforementioned cartridges.

As Ranger said, if you have an accurate 22MAG...better hang onto that one.

It looks like some are confusing accuracy with trajectory...just because the 22MAG shoots flatter than the 22LR... this has nothing to do with the inherent accuracy of the 22LR cartridge.

The 17HMR exhibits a flatter trajectory than the 22MAG, but is also more accurate.

You could shoot a high-end bolt gun loaded with Eley EPS or Lapua Midas 22LR and the same quality rifle except in 22MAG at 100y and notice right off that the 22LR Eley or Lapua is smokin' more accurate than the 22MAG, but the 22MAG shoots a flatter trajectory...and it gets there sooner with more thump.

We knew. :D

Twenty years ago I would have agreed with you. In the last few years .22 mag ammo has improved a great deal. You still have to find what your particular rifle likes, but my CZ 452 Varmint in .22 mag is just as accurate as a .22 LR, just goes farther and flatter.

thompson/center has never stopped making 5mag bbls, also taurus and rossi came out with revolvers in them, and maybe heritage arms, about 1 year ago, but I don't think they sold well. everybody is waiting on a new rifle. CZ and Savage were supposed to give it a go, but we are still waiting. otherwise you can put in a bid on an old remmy 591, or 592. Both of which are killer. Centurion does offer a new loading for this, and is also supposed to have allready in the works, and even more hot rodded round; a 32 or 35 grainer, at 2500 fps from the muzzle!!!! The current centurion round, is supposed to shoot from the old remmy's very well; I am not sure if the hotrod loads are safe in the old remmy's or not, allthough the rifles do look super stout, or maybe because of the round's greater weight and speed, maybe the old remmies cannot stabilize the faster , heavier fodder, so Centurion has not put it out on the market yet, and are also waiting on CZ or savage to bring out their rifles.... hhmmmm I hate waiting. I wanna bid on an old remmy, but I would commit hari kari, if sometime after , the cz or savage rifle came out, made to spec for shooting the hot rod 5mag rounds, that would drive me through the roof.

Just think, from a rimfire, a 32 or 35 grain bullet in 5mm doing 2500 fps from the muzzle; That is about what a hornet does, but with better b.c. and wind bucking ability, that is so schwing!!!

There is allways dudes over on rimfirecentral, talking about the 5milly, and what they are hearing and such, and wondering it the new rifles are coming out. You can bet that CZ, savage, and marlin reps read rimfirecentral, and read here for that matter....

CZGuy, in my own defense,it was 30 years ago. The little Ruger was a 10 shot-1 hole rifle @<40 yards with a Bushnell 4x32 scope. I hunted with both rifles for many years and was very happy with both. The Savage (which I still have) is fully glass bedded and still just as accurate as ever. For anything I can't hunt with the .22 mag ,I'll just take the .223 Stevens.

The only problem I have with a 22M is the extra cost of ammo. I have a Winchster 9422M and a Ruger Super Single Six with the Mag cyl and they are probably the most fun guns I shoot.
Get the rifle and soon you will be looking a hand gun to pair it with. Great Combo!

I have two 22mag rifles (Ruger 77/22mag SS & T/C Contender 16" SS 22lr rechambered to 22 mag) both will shoot 1 1/2" groups @ 100 yards with Remington Premier and CCI ammo. I also have two 17 Hmr rifles (Savage 93 & T/C Contender 16") both will shoot 1 - 1 1/2" @ 100 yards. The 17 shoots a little flatter but the 22 mag has better killing ability out to 125 yards. I have shot starlings, crows, squirrels, rabbits, racoons, groundhogs, and coyote with both 17 HMR & 22 mag. The 22 mag has better penetration & the 17 has better expansion. I used to own a 5mm mag until the ammo supply ran out several years ago. It performed between the 22 mag and the 17 HMR. Forget the tables and graphs. I'm talking about real life kills @ varied distances and conditions. I'll keep my 17's for now but I'll always have a 22 mag or two. I used to own a Marlin 22 mag SS rifle synthetic stock. Shot great - sold it to a guy in Alaska that wanted it to hunt small game. It too was a good gun - shot 1 3/4" groups @ 100 yards. I do most of my squirrel hunting with a 22Lr pistol or rifle - it's all you need if you hunt small game for meat. My most accurate 22's are my Remington 541S & T/C 10" 22LR match. Both will shoot 1/2" @ 50 YARDS. Both on calm days will put em all in one ragged hole at that distance. My go to rifle for coyote is a Remington model 7 in 22-250 - puts em down quick out to 400 yards. Shoot all that you can afford and enjoy the sport. Good shooting!

To answer the OP question about buying a .22 mag rifle, BUY IT! Keep your .22LR and the .17. They are great for some things. The .22 mag can do things that the .22LR and the .17, can't.

I bought my first .22 mag, just a few weeks ago. It's a used Marlin 25MN model. I'm now angry with myself for not owning a .22 mag years ago. This is the most accurate .22 I've ever shot. The only draw back is that ammo is not plentiful and it's not cheap. Dynapoints are the worse that I've tried.
