A friend found a bunch of 22 short ammo and gave it to me.

I know it won't cycle the action of a 22 LR pistol or rifle but can it be used safely as a single shot in a browning buckmark and a 10/22?

Any downside...I don't want to harm the firearms in anyway

Just out of curiosity anyone know what kind of velocity and range you can expect out of a pistol or 16" rifle barrel?

If it's modern ammo it won't harm those guns in any manner..........It might require some clean up for stand LR usage after shooting those shorts if the stuff leaves any appreciable residue in the chamber, but likely not.

As an aside or two, I have a German Anschutz.......not the Savage version......that absolutely loves shorts, so much so that it'l literally put one after another in the same hole over and over. With HP's that round proved a very deadly and quiet squirrel eliminator. I also modified my Browning autoloader to use the cartridge by replacing the feed and mag tube assembly.......it too handles the round well, but not like that Anschutz.

+1

Just give the chamber a good scrubbing before you switch back to Long Rifle ammo.

Range and power are not that bad.

The velocity of a Hi-Speed Short is about the same as a Long Rifle.

It just uses a lighter 29 grain bullet instead of a 40 grain bullet.

1. I just learned you can fire .22 short out of a .22lr. Used in a 10/22 just fine.

2. Don't do this alot.

3. Your action more than likely won't cycle and you'll need to eject shells by hand.

4. Make sure the bullet exits the barrel. Visually confirm before your next shot.

5. It sounds cool! It's like a pellet gun, very quiet.

somebody made a conversion for the 10/22 to shoot shorts, mag block, and recoil spring. not sure if it was a limited run. :D

Some older 22 rifles (like an old Sears I have) are chambered to fire LR, long, and short. I've never even shot any shorts out of it...this makes me want to try it.

There is no need for that with either Standard or High-Velocity Shorts.

They are too powerful to get stuck in the barrel.

The CB cap .22 Shorts are another matter.
Not any, or very little powder in them, and the primer supplies most of the motive force.
They can get stuck in a longer rifle barrel.

This is the perfect time for a new gun! Go out and find a Remington 550 series (550, 550A, 550-1). Shoots 22 S, L and LR. If it is clean and well lubricated it will also function in semiauto with Short CB Caps. Try some CCI Short Target, too. Not much louder than CB caps and perfect function.

I just fired a lot of .22 shorts through my H&R Sportster and an old Hi Standard Sentenial a coupl of weeks ago. Very accurate. I have also shot them in my Single Six with no problems.

I pretty much shoot CCI CB Shorts exclusively out of my Taurus 94 9-shot revolver.... I have a couple secluded/ safe places in the city where I can go shoot in woods... and there is never a shortage of targets (tons of junk lying around- bottles, cans, ect.)

I also hand drop the CB Shorts in my Marlin Model 60 with no problems and with pretty good accuracy...but they will NOT cycle the action.

Subsonic 22LR in my 22in barrel Marlin will cycle the action and are very quiet! If I'm not at the range, I shoot subsonics out of my Model 60 exclusively.

Ive shot about 100 rounds of .22 short CCi ammo from my mossberg 702 plinkster. They have the power to cycle the action but the short case prevents them from feeding reliably from the magazine. They make less noise than my $30 crosman BB gun (until they hit the target anyway), so I use em for backyard target practice.

@rmuzz
Safe, yes. Feed well from the mag? Good question.

I shoot a lot of shorts in my Marlin 981T. It's a tube fed bolt action, so it works great with them. Holds 25 shorts in the tube :)

Yes.

There have been reports of Aguila Colibri CB caps sticking in very long rifle barrels. But they have no powder.

CCI uses a small dab of powder in their CB Shorts & Longs and they are more powerful, and much louder, then Aguila Colibri CB caps.

Be aware that the Aguila ammo, is loaded in Long Rifle length cases.
CCI loads both CB Short & CB long cases.

Get the CB Long version to avoid chamber fouling in your Long Rifle chamber.
They are generally more accurate too, because the bullet doesn't have to jump the gap in chamber length.

The Long version from either CCI or Aguila will generally feed well in any rifle or pistol, but won't operate the action.

Some older 22 rifles (like an old Sears I have) are chambered to fire LR, long, and short.

Most bolt, lever, and pump guns will take take anything but I've never seen a semi-auto that would. the 22 long and long rifle are just the 22 short with a longer case and a heavier bullet in the case of the LR.

Thanks guys, thought that was the case. Just looking for confirmation.

I cut my teeth on shorts when I was a kid. Back then they were cheaper than longs or long rifles. A very efficient ctg. for sure.

Ruger warns against the use of shorts in the 10/22 because they do not feed reliably. If they hang up while chambering and the rim is struck by the bolt the round could go off before it is fully chambered thus resulting in hot gas and flying brass which could cause injury. I would not load them in the magazine of a 10/22. They probably can be loaded into the chamber and fired safely.

I shoot them out of an old 1939 Winchester 62 gallery gun and a Colt Junior chambered for shoot exclusively. Way cool! I prefer Remington Golden .22 Short Hi Speed hollow points. I don't care about the little pop for what I use them for. I really used to dig the .22 short "Rocket" load that gave a 15 grain compressed lead hollow base bullet 1750 FPS out of a rifle and 1250fps out of a pistol.

Like 351, I shot mostly Shorts as a kid, mainly because I could buy nearly twice as many rds for what little pocket money I could earn or wrangle down at the Western Auto. We ate a passel of squirrels and bunnies dropped with HSHP Shorts.

All of my older manual-action repeater .22's are marked ".22 S,L,LR" and have no problem feeding any of them. Of my "new" ma stuff marked ".22 LR only", only the Brno ZOM 451 doesn't feed it reliably.

I still use quite a bit of it, mostly for pest control and introducing kids to the basics. It's report is very mild, it's quite accurate and recoil is almost nil.

The only semiautos I've tried it in either turn into manual repeaters or single shots. My 10/22's will not feed them from the mag, nor will a Marlin M60 or Norinco ATD (Browning .22 Auto copy). My Ciener 1911 conversion will feed them manually (usually) as does my Beretta Neos. YMMV.

Other than the additional cost compared to LR ammo these days and having to scrub the chamber(s) thoroughly before switching back to LR's, what's not to like?
