I just got back from the range after a satisfying day with my older Marlin Model 60.

The big PITA is reloading the tube one little tiny .22 LR round at a time, every 17 rounds.

With the magazine spring and follower coming out completely, how hard would it be to make a tube "speed" loader from a plastic tube to speed load 15 to 17 rounds at a time? I could always fill the tubes at home in my spare time before a range trip.

Seems to me that dropping the rounds into the tube all at once wouldn't be any more risky than loading them one at a time.

I'm sure somebody has already made one of these but I checked Brownell's and a few other sites and did a search here and can't find any reference to anything like that.

Is there one already out there or do I start experimenting?

I've had a couple Model 60's over the years and liked them all. My only comment is that while, sure, you can make a tube to dump them in -- should be very easy to do -- but you still have to load those tubes up before leaving home. Not much less difficult than feeding them into the Marlin's tube, IMO. However, if you have time to make a bunch of tubes up and your range time is limited, it could save you some time in the end. I'd recommend some relatively stiff surgical tubing. Could be capped at each end with soft foam like, say, the disposable foam hearing protectors. Let us know what you come up with, and how it works.

Thanks guys

Perfect!

I ordered the "Spee-D-Loader" from Cabela's today.

Looks like exactly what I wanted. I can pre-load at leisure the day before a range trip and speed load at the range.

Aluminum arrows for compound bows with one end cut off work as well and can be picked up cheap.
They can be cut to any length so they can be carried in a back pack or left full length.

You can find 'em cheap at flea markets, Wal-Mart or at yard sales.

Have used a Spee-D-Loader for years (8 tubes, cut to five rounds each
length) with Nylon 66 and Marlin M60 (just have to remember to nose up
for 66 butt tube, base up for M60 under barrel tube) and very convenient
for jacket pocket carry.

If your time on the range is limited, loading the Spee-D-Loader at home
one at a time beats loading one a time at the range.

you got me to thinking there my friend.
KaceCoyote I just wish they made a Marlin 60 variant with a removable magazine.
given the model 60's design and if you cand find
1. a gun smith who's willing to experiment with the idea.
2. are willing to sacrifice a model 60 you own or would buy.
i think you may just have somthing there worth considering let us know how it works out i would be verry intrested in it.

My main issue with Marlin autoloaders is the size of their magazines. I like how the 10/22 has a smooth "belly". Is it possible to make perhaps a removable magazine tube?

Marlin autoloader with detachable magazine

Marlin Model 70 is a variation that uses a detachable box
magazine: however, the seven and ten round boxes project
noticeably below the stock.

There is also a variation of the model 70 called the Papoose
that has a srew-on barrel and no forestock; a camper or
backpacker model to compete with the Armalite AR7 Explorer.
It too feeds from a detachable box magazine.

The Model 70 is now the Model 795:

It comes in blued or stainless (795SS).

Spee-D-Loaders are great. Fill them while you're home watching TV--saves your range time. I have one and am planning on buying another or two.

I forgot to mention that the Spee D Loader came with a flyer stating that they now sell a belt mounted pouch to carry it in. Don't have one, but I know some people have said it is needed when in the field...

Have to admit I've gotten pretty good at holding four rounds between thumb and index finger and rolling them in.

I'll probably get two...

I just wish they made a Marlin 60 variant with a removable magazine.

When myself or family members go shooting 22's, we typically go through 1000 rounds. Rarely ever do we shoot less than 500, maybe on days where someone gets tired of shooting in 100+ degree heat.

In my experience with magazine fed 22's, even with a few high capacity mags and/or speed loaders....we still spend about the same amount of time loading them up. Especially if we do a whole bunch of prone shooting or shooting from a table and short bag for rest. Then those high capacity mags get in the way.

anyone used this spee-d-loader on a 39a?

I haven't, but I have used it on a Winchester 9422. (And a Remington 572 and a Marlin Model 60.) It should work about the same.

You have to completely remove the inner magazine tube when loading. Just be sure you have somewhere to put it down; you don't want to be dropping it in sand or anything like that. If I'm not at a range with benches, I usually have a mat or something to lay my rifle and gear on anyway.
