.22 WMR or .17....?

IMO the "fun factor" is much greater on the 17 HMR. About 275yds is all it is good for as the bullet goes subsonic and loses all accuracy.

I have Marlin 882 22 magnum. It shoots pretty accurate for about 12-15 rounds at 100 yds. with Win. Super X 40 gr. hollow points (inside of 1 1/2 in. circle, 5 shots.), then you need to clean it. I expect there is better ammo, but I have another 1000 rds or so
left that I bought 10 years ago at about half todays prices. Federal 50 grain HP's shot inside a 1 inch circle at 100 yds, but I think they have been discontinued. Federal has some ballistic tables on their website that might be of interest for 22 mag et.al. The biggest problem I had was finding a durable scope mount. The best quality "tip off " rings
only held zero if you handle them gingerly. I can shoot as well with the open sights on this gun and I finally just went with them. They'll be on target every time. When sighted in at 100 yds, bullet drop is about 6 inches at 150 (which is about the max effective range for me) and a inch high at 50 yds. with the 40 gr. super x. Energy is about 225 ft lbs at 50 yds, 155 at 100 yds and 115 at 150 yds. Wind drift (10 mph) is about 6 inches at 100 yds and about 12 inches at 150 yds. It's an inexpensive gun that I use for coyote, bobcat, fox. If you want to shoot farther you might want to go for a 223. The scope- scope mount deal was really more hassle than I wanted. I like to carry it on horseback often and most mounts and inexpensive scopes don't hold up to the vibration. Probably if you are just carrying it around it isn't such a big deal. If you can shoot open sights well I'd say just go with them on the rimfires and forget the scopes.
I also had problems with the barrel and action flexing when tightening the stock screws. It was hard to get the stock screws reasonably tight without flexing the action. I ended up glass bedding
the entire action at every point I could and the barrel bedded to out past the barrel stud for the forward stock screw. It did solve the problem. It works satisfactory for what I use it for. I don't know that I would recommend buying one though.

Purchased a Marlin 17vs a few years back. Very easy rifle to shoot, extremely accurate. However, I would recommend the Savage over it due to the acu-trigger.
