I have a Ruger #1 Lightweight Sporter that has a 1 in 9 twist. I would like to experiment with Hornady 68 grain BTHP and Winchester 748. I am open to suggestions.

Edited: With fresh eyes in the morning I see this is a triple-deuce with a 1-9", not a .223. In which case I think W748 would work OK with the smaller case, though I wonder if H4895 might work too.

Also, I stand by my statement of the 68gr and 69gr .224" bullets generally being tolerant of jump to the rifling. They don't need to be set close to the rifling for good accuracy.

I'll also stick with my suggestion that if you find instances of people using either the 69gr Sierra or Nosler match bullets in a similar situation, you should be able to sub in the 68gr Hornady.

Tell us more about your Ruger #1, this sounds like a rather unique bird.

Keep in mind that the Hornady 68gr BTHP match bullet is 0.90" longer than the Sierra 69gr HPBT-M bullet. Loading in a bolt gun this want be a problem but will change/increase the pressure if at the same OAL. What I have found is the Sierra preforms best around a 0.030" jump where the Hornady works better with a longer jump.

The Number one was purchased about 7 years or so ago. Ruger advertised it and my gun store had on order a year before it arrived . The manager was at the next shot show and he ask Ruger about it and was advised 500 were made .I have a 2x7 Cabellas scope on it. Very accurate with 50 to 60 grain bullets. May use starting load from Speer #10 on 222 and 70 grain Semi Spitzer.Just wanting to shoot for accuracy.

Well t was a fun experiment .I loaded 5 and the group at 50 yards was about 2 feet and all 5 keyholed .I shall stay with my 55 grain Hornady SP!

Weird. 1:9 should stabilize 68 grs length. I was thinking how great that would be in 222. Bummed to hear it didn't work out.
