Probably a silly question, but since I'm still learning, I passed on buying some yesterday until I checked with us THR-ers.

I know there's a physical length difference in the bullet so that's one point, and (while probably) no difference in the case length - I want to be sure (2nd point) there's no problem.

My thought was maybe to use the varmint round in urban situations if need be - is this rational?

While we're at it, my regular gun shop seems to be having trouble getting, not only Q3131A (Isreali Mfr 5.56), but also Win Q3131 white box .223 55g. So, they've really loaded up on Wolf .223 in FMJ and hollow point. I know there's pro and con on Wolf ammo - not a factor in this post - but I'm asking if anyone here has used the Wolf .223 hollow point in AR-15 (mine w/Stainless Steel barrel) and what do you use it for - plinking, practice, or serious stuff?

All input appreciated.

Which brand of slug? I use 55gr SXSP in my 1:9 barrel just fine. It's short though, 14" with a permanent ak74 brake.

If you have a longer barrel and load them fast, most likely it won't work well.

IIWY: I would load up 10 at each incriment while climbing the powder chart, shoot off bags at 25 yards, watch for clean holes in the paper. Thats what I did with the SXSPs.

WHOOPS!!!! I didn't pay attention. On commercial ammo I have no idea.

Twist is 9 in an 16" bbl.

Edit for bbl length - old age, what else?

i've used it with good results, POI is about 3 inches higher than xm193, or my handloads.... works on paper, tennis balls, golf balls, produce, rabbits, and cats... holes are perfectly round in paper... wouldn't use it for social work... i wouldn't use a rifle in the house unless it was last resort..

my barrel is a rra 20" stainless varmint 1-8" twist

and just for kicks... 64gr. sp barnaul is good for whitetail, cats, yotes... wouldn't use it for social work, has over penetrated everytime except skull shots on whitetail...

I don't know anything about AR15's but if your talking about Winchester white box 45 gr varmint loads, they worked great out of my buddies savage 12fv with a 1 in 9" twist.

223 45g Varmint Usable?

It all depends on your Barrel Twist rate. A 1-in-7 in twist would probably not hit a target 200 yds out. The 45 gr will shoot real good in a 9 or 10 in twist Bbl. In a 22-250 they use a 1-in-14 inch twist.

I appreciate the input, folks. I now surmise that overall round length is okay for the AR.

And the Wolf HP is good for paper holes.

yesterdaysyouth: Not a ballistic 'pert, I ask what makes the 45g climb higher than an xm193 - powder? Bullet weight? ( ?? )
