I have currently been thinking about getting a remington 700 SPS Varmint in either .308 Win or .223. This gun will be used for long range shooting out to about 300 yards or more maybe. I may even outfit the gun with a new stock if i go much further. The only reason im considering getting in .223 is so i can share ammo with an AR-15 which i am contemplating getting down the road. Im pretty sure i should get it in 308 as it won't be moved as easily by wind, plus i believe it has better bullet choices for reloading. At some point i will be reloading as well. What do you guys think i should do?

I am in the same position right now and think I am going to go with a .308.

You could get an AR-10 to share ammo with your 700.

AR-10, not what im interested in. Too big. The reason i want an AR-15 is so i have a light gun that is still accurate.

I was thinking of getting a Remington 700 in the .223 rem caliber but I want to get more distance so I'll be going with a .308 instead. Too bad the ammo is hard to get locally and it is expensive.

You might want to economize and get a good H-bar first and maybe not need the second rifle. 300yds with it is no problem on prarie dogs and squirrels. If your after big game then the 308 bolt is the way to go.

Dicks is selling a Remington 700 SPS-varmint with scope and green stock in .223 for $499. Its a Dicks exclusive and is less expensive than a regular SPS-V.

I did what you're thinking about and have a left hand Rem 700 Varminter. Unfortunately, its semi-automatic counterparts are ostracized and residing in Nevada.

I also think and ar for 300 yards is fine if its to be target or small game - you can even get two different uppers for varmint and general use. Ya give up nothing in .223 with a ar 15 and a decent varmint upper.

Having said that I have ar's and a bolt ar 15 in 223 and none are leaving anytime soon although the boltgun would leave first...

and I also have the ptr 91 and a Remington varmint in 308

they all have their places... it depends on more of what ya really want to do. Add big game and the .22's are not a first choice!

If you are going to be reloading, no reason at all not to get the 700 in .308 and the AR-15 in .223.

My logic is that if you really are attempting to squeeze accuracy out of both rifles, you will want to handload each one differently.

Even in the same caliber your AR and the 700 will almost without fail prefer two different loads for maximum accuracy. So realistically you will be creating two loads even in the same caliber. Why not just get the 700 in .308 and open up alot of versatility you would miss with just .223 platforms.

The only real downfalls I can see is an inital cost of having to buy two sets of dies, and two sets of reloadable brass.

Guys in High power shoot 223 to 600 all the time, it's not that big a deal. Problem with a Remington in 223 is I don't believe they offer any modern twists.

Get seperate, better in the long run. You may end up having to get 2 different bullet weights anyway.
