I've used dot sights in the past. I actually have a Sig Romeo 5 mounted on one of my AR's currently. The batteries have a life of 7000 hours and if the sight doesn't move shuts off after 2 minutes. I never turn it off. I figure I'll replace the battery once a year and have battery life to spare.
I like it well enough, but I'm going back to a 1-4X scope of some sort as soon as practical. I have 3 AR's. One has this.

It has an illuminated reticle if I want to use it, but I don't really foresee any need. On 1X it is just as fast to use as a dot, and 6X gives me enough magnification for precision shots out to 500-600 yards.
The other has this

I'm going to buy a 2nd one and sell the Sig dot sight.
I don't find the dot any faster to use, and they are too coarse for any type of precision beyond 50 yards. The dots are easy to see in poor light, but the glass so poor it is hard to see the target in low light. I've killed deer 25 minutes before sunrise with the Pentax above and I have a weapon mounted light for shooting in the dark.
If $250-$300 is overbudget there are 1-4X options on 1" tubes priced $150-$200. About the same as a cheap dot sight.
